**State Route 67** (**SR 67**) is a primary [state highway](/source/State_highway) in the southwest part of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Virginia](/source/Virginia). It runs from [SR 80](/source/State_Route_80_(Virginia)) near [Honaker](/source/Honaker,_VA) east to [U.S. Route 460](/source/U.S._Route_460_(Virginia)) (US 460) at [Raven](/source/Raven,_Virginia), east [concurrently](/source/Concurrent_(road)) with US 460 and [US 460 Business](/source/U.S._Route_460_Business_(Richlands,_Virginia)) (US 460 Bus.) into downtown [Richlands](/source/Richlands,_VA), and north to [SR 616](/source/Virginia_State_Route_616_(Tazewell_County)) at [Jewell Ridge](/source/Jewell_Ridge,_Virginia) on the [Tazewell](/source/Tazewell_County,_Virginia)–[Buchanan](/source/Buchanan_County,_Virginia) county line.

## Route description

SR 67 begins at SR 80 east of Honaker in [Russell County](/source/Russell_County,_Virginia). From there, it heads in a generally northeasterly direction to the [Clinch River](/source/Clinch_River) at [Gardner](/source/Gardner,_Virginia). SR 67 follows the Clinch River to the settlement of [Swords Creek](/source/Swords_Creek,_Virginia) and then heads north next to [Swords Creek](/source/Swords_Creek) to [Dye](/source/Dye,_Virginia). It curved gradually east along a smaller creek, crosses a summit, and runs alongside other creeks to the county line at [West Raven](/source/West_Raven,_Virginia).[1]

Upon entering Tazewell County, SR 67 again parallels the Clinch River at [Raven](/source/Raven,_Virginia), following an old alignment of US 460 to [Doran](/source/Doran,_Virginia). It then heads east on US 460 and US 460 Bus into downtown Richlands. SR 67 leaves Richlands to the north, running alongside [Big Creek](/source/Big_Creek_(Virginia)) past [Seaboard](/source/Seaboard,_Virginia) and [Coaldan](/source/Coaldan,_Virginia) to near Jewell Ridge, rising onto [Smith Ridge](/source/Smith_Ridge) (the [Tennessee Valley Divide](/source/Tennessee_Valley_Divide)), and ending at SR 616 at the Buchanan County line. SR 616 runs along the county line at the top of the ridge.[1]

## History

An initial 0.89 miles (1.43 km) piece north from [SR 126](/source/State_Route_126_(Virginia_pre-1933)) (now US 460 Business) in Richlands was added to the state highway system in 1931 as **State Route 138**,[2] and a further 4.11 miles (6.61 km) was added in 1932.[3] The road was renumbered **State Route 83** in the [1933 renumbering](/source/1933_renumbering_(Virginia)), and the rest of current SR 67 was numbered **State Route 619**.[4] In 1937, the road north to Jewell Ridge was transferred to the primary system.[5]

On the other side, the road from [SR 111](/source/State_Route_111_(Virginia_pre-1933)) (now SR 80) east for 5.52 miles (8.88 km) was added in 1932,[6] and in the [1933 renumbering](/source/1933_renumbering_(Virginia)) it was also numbered SR 83. An extension to the east for 3.76 miles (6.05 km) was added in 1934,[7] and the rest of the road east to [SR 84](/source/State_Route_84_(Virginia_1933)) (now US 460) was numbered **State Route 617**.[4][8] The gap in SR 83 was filled in 1938, transferring some of SR 617 to the primary system.[9] (A short piece of SR 617 from SR 83 to [SR 632](/source/State_Route_632_(Russell_County,_Virginia)) remains, as does a much larger piece of Tazewell County's [SR 617](/source/Virginia_State_Route_617_(Tazewell_County)).)

In the [1940 renumbering](/source/1940_renumbering_(Virginia)), SR 83 was renumbered SR 67, as the number 83 was needed for [its current alignment](/source/State_Route_83_(Virginia)), matching [West Virginia Route 83](/source/West_Virginia_Route_83).[10]
