**Vintage Books** is a trade paperback publishing [imprint](/source/Imprint_(trade_name)) of [Penguin Random House](/source/Penguin_Random_House) originally established by [Alfred A. Knopf](/source/Alfred_A._Knopf) in 1954. The company was acquired by [Random House](/source/Random_House) in April 1960, and a British division was set up in 1990. After Random House merged with [Bantam](/source/Bantam_Books) [Doubleday](/source/Doubleday_(publisher)) [Dell](/source/Dell_Publishing), Doubleday's **Anchor Books** trade paperback line was added to the same division as Vintage.[1] After Random House merged with [Penguin](/source/Penguin_Group), Vintage UK was transferred to [Penguin UK](/source/Penguin_Books).

In addition to publishing classic and contemporary works in paperback under the Vintage brand, the imprint also oversees the sub-imprints [Bodley Head](/source/Bodley_Head), [Jonathan Cape](/source/Jonathan_Cape), [Chatto and Windus](/source/Chatto_and_Windus), [Harvill Secker](/source/Harvill_Secker), [Hogarth Press](/source/Hogarth_Press), Square Peg, and Yellow Jersey.[2] Vintage began publishing some titles in the mass-market paperback format in 2003.[3]
