Patrick was born in [the Bronx](/source/the_Bronx) on January 19, 1935, the second of three children. He dropped out of [Cardinal Hayes High School](/source/Cardinal_Hayes_High_School), married his wife in 1954, with whom he had two children, and began selling Bibles door-to-door. Patrick found the job dishonest, so he returned to his studies, earning a high school diploma and graduated from [New York University](/source/New_York_University) with a degree in mechanical engineering.
