**Vincent Mathews** (June 29, 1766 – August 23, 1846) was a [United States representative](/source/United_States_representative) from [New York](/source/New_York's_congressional_delegations). He was born at "Matthew's Field," in [Blooming Grove, New York](/source/Blooming_Grove,_New_York) in [Orange County](/source/Orange_County,_New_York) in the village founded by his grandfather of the same name. He had two uncles who were supportive of the British efforts during the [American Revolutionary War](/source/American_Revolutionary_War), [David Mathews](/source/David_Mathews), the [Loyalist](/source/Loyalist) [Mayor of New York City](/source/Mayor_of_New_York_City), and his brother Fletcher. Mathews' father James was arrested along with David and Fletcher in a suspected attempt to kidnap [George Washington](/source/George_Washington), known as the [Hickey Plot](/source/Thomas_Hickey_(soldier)).

Mathews pursued an academic course in [Noah Webster](/source/Noah_Webster)'s school at [Goshen](/source/Goshen_(village),_New_York) and at the academy at [Hackensack, New Jersey](/source/Hackensack,_New_Jersey). He studied law in New York City, was admitted to the [bar](/source/Barlaw) in 1790 and commenced practice in [Elmira](/source/Elmira,_New_York).

Mathews was a member of the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly) (Tioga Co.) in [1794](/source/17th_New_York_State_Legislature) and [1795](/source/18th_New_York_State_Legislature); and of the [New York State Senate](/source/New_York_State_Senate) (Western D.) from 1796 to 1803, sitting in the [20th](/source/20th_New_York_State_Legislature), [21st](/source/21st_New_York_State_Legislature), [22nd](/source/22nd_New_York_State_Legislature), [23rd](/source/23rd_New_York_State_Legislature), [24th](/source/24th_New_York_State_Legislature), [25th](/source/25th_New_York_State_Legislature) and [26th New York State Legislatures](/source/26th_New_York_State_Legislature).

He was bounty land claims commissioner in 1798 and served as Cavalry commander and brigadier general in the [New York militia](/source/New_York_militia). He was elected as a [Federalist](/source/USFederalist) to the [11th United States Congress](/source/11th_United_States_Congress), holding office from March 4, 1809, to March 3, 1811. Mathews was [district attorney](/source/District_attorney) for the seventh district of New York from 1813 to 1815 and moved to [Bath](/source/Bath_(village),_New_York), and in 1821 to [Rochester](/source/Rochester,_New_York).

He was again a member of the State Assembly (Monroe Co.) in [1826](/source/49th_New_York_State_Legislature), and was district attorney of [Monroe County](/source/Monroe_County,_New_York) in 1831. He resumed the practice of law in Rochester, where he died in 1846; he was buried in [Mount Hope Cemetery](/source/Mount_Hope_Cemetery_(Rochester)).
