**Vinayakan** is an Indian actor, former dancer, and composer who predominantly works in [Malayalam](/source/Malayalam) films as well as some [Tamil](/source/Tamil_language) language films.[2][3][4] He started his career with a un-credited appearance in the 1995 film *[Maanthrikam](/source/Maanthrikam)*.

Vinayakan won the [Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor](/source/Kerala_State_Film_Award_for_Best_Actor) in the year 2016 for his role of Ganga in [Rajiv Ravi](/source/Rajiv_Ravi)'s *[Kammatipaadam](/source/Kammatipaadam).*[5] His recognized roles include Edakochi "Dude" in [*Aadu - Oru Bheegara Jeevi Aanu*](/source/Aadu_(film)) and its successor film [*Aadu 2*](/source/Aadu_2_(film)), and as Ayyappan in [Lijo Jose Pellissery](/source/Lijo_Jose_Pellissery)'s *[Ee.Ma.Yau.](/source/Ee.Ma.Yau.)*

He gained wider attention by playing the antagonist Varman in [Nelson Dilipkumar](/source/Nelson_Dilipkumar)'s Tamil-language action film [*Jailer*](/source/Jailer_(2023_Tamil_film)) (2023) starring [Rajinikanth](/source/Rajinikanth).[6]

## Career

### Acting

Vinayakan began his career as a dancer and had a dance troupe named *Black Mercury* with [Fire dance](/source/Fire_dance) being his forte. Director [Thampi Kannanthanam](/source/Thampi_Kannanthanam) introduced him in *[Maanthrikam](/source/Maanthrikam)* and later in *[Onnaman](/source/Onnaman)*. He was noticed for his performances in *[Stop Violence](/source/Stop_Violence)*, *[Vellithira](/source/Vellithira)*, *[Chathikkatha Chanthu](/source/Chathikkatha_Chanthu)*, *[Chotta Mumbai](/source/Chotta_Mumbai)* and *[Thottappan](/source/Thottappan)*. Also, he appeared in a couple of Bollywood movies.[3][4]

Vinayakan was appreciated for his performance as Ganga in [Rajeev Ravi](/source/Rajeev_Ravi)' s 2016 film *[Kammatipaadam](/source/Kammatipaadam)*,[7][8] and nominated for a national award.[9] It also brought him the Best Actor Award of the [Kerala State Film Awards](/source/Kerala_State_Film_Awards), The North American Film Award for Outstanding performance in a film and Best Actor Award (2016) of the Cinema Paradiso Club Cine Awards.[10] In the same film, he made his debut as a music director.[11]

*[Ee.Ma.Yau.](/source/Ee.Ma.Yau.)* was included in [The Hindu](/source/The_Hindu)'s top 25 Malayalam films of the decade and is widely regarded as one of the defining movies of the [New Wave Movement](/source/New_generation_(Malayalam_film_movement)).[12]

### Music

Vinayakan composed the song "Puzhu Pulikal" for the movie *[Kammatipaadam](/source/Kammatipaadam).[14]* He has also composed the music for the title track of [*Trance*](/source/Trance_(2020_film)) (2020).[15] He has also sung songs for [Rafi](/source/Rafi_Mecartin)'s film *[Role Models](/source/Role_Models_(2017_film))* and another one for [*Ordinary*](/source/Ordinary_(film)), [Sugeeth](/source/Sugeeth)'s movie*.[11]*

## Controversies

- On 24 October 2023, he was arrested for creating a ruckus at the [Ernakulam](/source/Ernakulam) Town North police station in [Kochi](/source/Kochi). The incident was from a family dispute and he was later released on bail after a medical examination. [MLA](/source/Member_of_the_Legislative_Assembly_(India)) of [Thrikkakara](/source/Thrikkakkara), [Uma Thomas](/source/Uma_Thomas), publicly criticized the quick release, suggesting it was related to Vinayakan's political associations [16][17]

- On 7 September 2024, Vinayakan was taken into custody by [Rajiv Gandhi International Airport](/source/Rajiv_Gandhi_International_Airport) Police in [Hyderabad](/source/Hyderabad) following an altercation with [Central Industrial Security Force](/source/Central_Industrial_Security_Force) (CISF) gate staff. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol during the incident.[18] Security officials affirmed he arrived in Hyderabad in a visibly drunken state on an Indigo flight from Kochi and was to travel to Goa, before his arrest.[19]

- On 9 May 2025, Vinayakan was taken into custody for drunk and disorderly behaviour at a hotel in [Kollam](/source/Kollam), where he was staying from May 2 for a movie shoot.[20][21]
