He won the silver medal at the [1987 World Championships](/source/1987_World_Championships_in_Athletics) in [Rome](/source/Rome).
His personal best throw is 85.16 metres, achieved in June 1987 in [Karl-Marx-Stadt](/source/Karl-Marx-Stadt) (today [Chemnitz](/source/Chemnitz)). It is also the standing [Kazakhstani record](/source/List_of_Kazakhstani_records_in_athletics). His personal best with the old javelin design, in use prior to April 1986, was 93.70 metres, thrown in [Kiev](/source/Kiev) on July 17, 1985. This was the third best mark ever by a Soviet thrower, behind only [Heino Puuste](/source/Heino_Puuste) and [Jānis Lūsis](/source/J%C4%81nis_L%C5%ABsis).
