**Vikedal** is a [former municipality](/source/List_of_former_municipalities_of_Norway) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The 134-square-kilometre (52 sq mi)[5] municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965. The area is now part of [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality) in the [traditional district](/source/Traditional_districts_of_Norway) of [Ryfylke](/source/Ryfylke). The [administrative centre](/source/Administrative_centre) was the village of [Vikedal](/source/Vikedal) where [Vikedal Church](/source/Vikedal_Church) is located.[6]

Prior to its dissolution in 1965, the 134.03-square-kilometre (51.75 sq mi) municipality was the th largest by area out of the 525 municipalities in Norway. Vikedal Municipality was the 484th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 977. The municipality's [population density](/source/Population_density) was 7.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (19/sq mi) and its population had increased by 3.5% over the previous 10-year period.[7][8]

## General information

The [parish](/source/Prestegjeld) of Vikedal was created as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see [formannskapsdistrikt](/source/Formannskapsdistrikt) law). On 1 January 1923 when the large Vikedal Municipality was divided into three:[9]

- the southeastern part (population: 604) became the new [Imsland Municipality](/source/Imsland_Municipality)

- the northern part (population: 558) became the new [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality)

- the central part (population: 924) remained as a smaller Vikedal Municipality

On 1 January 1965, the municipality was dissolved due to recommendations of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee) and its lands were divided as follows:[9]

- the Hapnes and Dokskar farms on the south side of the [Yrkefjorden](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yrkefjorden&action=edit&redlink=1) (population: 2) was merged with [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality), [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality), and parts of [Avaldsnes Municipality](/source/Avaldsnes_Municipality), [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality), and [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality) to form a larger [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality)

- the rest of Vikedal Municipality (population: 978) was merged with parts of [Imsland Municipality](/source/Imsland_Municipality), [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality), and [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality), as well as all of [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality) to form the new [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality)

### Name

The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/Prestegjeld)) is named after the old *[Vikedal](/source/Vikedal)* farm ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Víkadalr*) since the first [Vikedal Church](/source/Vikedal_Church) was built there. The first element is the plural [genitive case](/source/Genitive_case) of *[vík](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/v%C3%ADk#Old_Norse)* which means "[bay](/source/Bay)" or "[cove](/source/Cove)". The last element is *[dalr](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dalr#Old_Norse)* which means "[valley](/source/Valley)" or "dale". The farm is located at the mouth of the main river that runs through the valley where it flows out into a bay along the fjord.[10]

### Churches

The [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) had one parish (*sokn*) within Vikedal Municipality. At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Vikedal [prestegjeld](/source/Prestegjeld) and the [Ryfylke prosti](/source/Ryfylke_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Stavanger](/source/Diocese_of_Stavanger).[8]
