It is located 14 km east of [Elektrėnai](/source/Elektr%C4%97nai), on [Lake Vievis](/source/Lake_Vievis) in the [Dzūkija](/source/Dz%C5%ABkija) ethnographic region and [Vilnius County](/source/Vilnius_County).

Vievis Manor was first mentioned in 1522. The town, which belonged to the [Ogiński family](/source/Ogi%C5%84ski_family), was mentioned in 1539. In the first half of the 16th century, the first [Catholic](/source/Catholic) church was built there. About 1600, the Ogiński family built a [Uniate](/source/Uniate) church and founded the [abbey](/source/abbey) of the [Holy Spirit](/source/Holy_Spirit) (Lithuanian: ''Šventosios dvasios''). In 1794 and 1812, the church burned down and was rebuilt in 1816. In 1837 an [Orthodox](/source/Eastern_Orthodox_Church) church was built.
In the period between [World War I](/source/World_War_I) and [World War II](/source/World_War_II), after the [Polish–Lithuanian War](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_War), Vievis was near the dividing line between Lithuania and [Poland](/source/Poland).
