His father is noted as being an instrumental industrial designer for [Ford](/source/Ford_Motor_Company) in [Dagenham](/source/Dagenham) who died when Victor was aged four. At 16 years old, Victor left school and got a job in London as a messenger boy for the Hector Hughes design agency and attended life drawing classes at [St Martin's School of Art](/source/St_Martin's_School_of_Art) in the evening.
