'''Via Merulana''' is a street in the [Rione Monti](/source/Rione_Monti) of [Rome](/source/Rome), [Italy](/source/Italy). It is south of the main train station ([Stazioni Termini](/source/Roma_Termini_railway_station)) of Rome, near the [Oppian Hill](/source/Oppian_Hill). The street connects two major papal basilicas: the [Santa Maria Maggiore](/source/Basilica_of_Santa_Maria_Maggiore) to the [St John Lateran](/source/St_John_Lateran). The name derives from family that owned the land during the medieval period. The present street was initiated by [Pope Gregory XIII](/source/Pope_Gregory_XIII) in the late 16th century and finished not long after by [Pope Sixtus V](/source/Pope_Sixtus_V).

On the route described above are the facades of the church of [Sant'Antonio da Padova](/source/Sant'Antonio_da_Padova_in_Via_Merulana) and the adjacent Franciscan convent. Previously the site was occupied by the Villa Giustiniani Massimo. At the intersection with the [Roman](/source/Ancient_Roman) [Via Labicana](/source/Via_Labicana) is the facade of the ancient church of [Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano](/source/Santi_Marcellino_e_Pietro_al_Laterano). On the intersection with via di San Vito is the church of [Sant'Alfonso di Liguori all'Esquilino](/source/Church_of_St._Alphonsus_Liguori%2C_Rome) of the Order of the Redemptorist Priests.<ref>[https://www.romasegreta.it/esquilino/via-merulana.html Roma Segreta] website.</ref> Instead, on the intersection with via Mecenate is the [Auditorium of Maecenas](/source/Auditorium_of_Maecenas), a nymphaeum part of the [Gardens of Maecenas](/source/Gardens_of_Maecenas). Other institutions on the route include the [Museo Nazionale d'Arte Orientale](/source/National_Museum_of_Oriental_Art) and the [Pontifical University Antonianum](/source/Pontifical_University_Antonianum). The ancient church of [San Matteo in Via Merulana](/source/San_Matteo_in_Via_Merulana) was destroyed in 1810.

The street is included in the crime novel ''[That Awful Mess on Via Merulana](/source/That_Awful_Mess_on_Via_Merulana)'' by the Italian writer [Carlo Emilio Gadda](/source/Carlo_Emilio_Gadda). The street is also included in the novel ‘’[The Curse of Pietro Houdini](/source/The_Curse_of_Pietro_Houdini)’’ by the writer [Derek B. Miller](/source/Derek_B._Miller)
