Sims earned a B.S degree. in [political science](/source/political_science) and [criminal justice](/source/criminal_justice) and a [Master's degree](/source/Master's_degree) in [Public Administration](/source/Public_administration) from the [University of Akron](/source/University_of_Akron). She worked as the special projects and government affairs administrator for Akron Summit Community Action Inc.<ref name=":0" />
