The '''''Velhas Conquistas''''', or "Old Conquests", are a grouping of the areas in [Goa](/source/Goa) which were incorporated into [Portuguese India](/source/Portuguese_India) in the early half of the 16th century AD. [Goa, Daman and Diu](/source/Goa%2C_Daman_and_Diu) comprised the last remaining Portuguese possessions in India. [Macao](/source/Portuguese_Macao) and [Timor Leste](/source/Timor_Leste) were administratively separated.

Over the course of nearly five centuries of European rule since the [Portuguese conquest of Goa](/source/Portuguese_conquest_of_Goa), these areas underwent urbanisation and they were elevated to ''[concelhos](/source/concelhos)'' (municipalities), with the administrative centre at [Velha Goa](/source/Velha_Goa). Having been acquired by 1510 AD or within the next few decades,<ref name="henn"/> they formed the oldest parts and the core of Portuguese Goa and remain the central theme in the history, geography, and culture of present-day Goa. The ''[Novas Conquistas](/source/Novas_Conquistas)'' or New Conquests are the outer periphery of Goa, surrounding ''Velha Conquistas'' and bordering the erstwhile [British India](/source/British_India). ''Novas Conquistas'' of present-day Goa shares borders with the [Konkan division](/source/Konkan_division) under Maharashtra's supremacy; also with [Belgaum](/source/Belgaum) and [North Canara](/source/North_Canara) districts of [Carnataca](/source/Carnataca).

The three ''concelhos'' of the territory are [Bardes](/source/Bardes), ''Ilhas de Goa'' ([Tiswadi](/source/Tiswadi)) and ''Salcette'' (present-day [Salcette](/source/Salcette) and [Mormugao](/source/Mormugao_taluka) ''[talukas](/source/Tehsil)'').<ref name="avelar"/> In writing postal addresses, ''Velhas Conquistas'' is abbreviated to "VC".

In [layman's terms](/source/layman's_terms) and contemporary contexts, ''Velhas Conquistas'' is taken to mean the westernmost and the central portions of Goa. The Old Conquests are also the most socioeconomically-developed areas of Goa.

== Demographics ==
''Velhas Conquistas'' has a considerably higher Catholic population as compared to ''Novas Conquistas''. This is primarily attributed to the impacts of early Catholic missionary work, and the ensuing Goan Inquisition, both of which faded in relevance and strength towards the late 1700s when the new territories were incorporated into Portuguese India.
