# Vehmsmoor

The **Vehmsmoor** is a [nature reserve](/source/Nature_reserve) in North [Germany](/source/Germany). It is located in the borough of [Walsrode](/source/Walsrode) within the district of [Soltau-Fallingbostel](/source/Landkreis_Soltau-Fallingbostel) in [Lower Saxony](/source/Lower_Saxony). Its classification number is NSG LÜ 182.[1]

## Description

The Vehmsmoor has an area of 255 hectares (630 acres) and lies between the villages [Fulde](/source/Fulde_(Walsrode)) und [Vethem](/source/Vethem) in the borough of Walsrode, three kilometres west of the town centre of Walsrode and two kilometres south of the [A 27 motorway](/source/Bundesautobahn_27).

The [Jordanbach](/source/Jordanbach), a tributary of the [Böhme](/source/B%C3%B6hme_(river)), drains the Vehmsmoor.

Peat was cut in the [raised bog](/source/Raised_bog) for centuries. Today it is covered by a [birch](/source/Birch)-[pine](/source/Pine) [carr](/source/Carr_(landform)) (*Bruchwald*). Some vegetation of a raised bog nature still exists, consisting mainly of [cottongrass](/source/Cottongrass), [cranberries](/source/Cranberry), [heather](/source/Erica_(plant)), [sundew](/source/Drosera) and, in the peat cuttings, [peat moss](/source/Sphagnum). [Moor grass](/source/Molinia) dominates the area. The [crane](/source/Common_crane) is breeding again in the area.[1]

## History

On 25 May 1990 the Vehmsmoor was legally designated as a nature reserve. The district of Soltau-Fallingbostel is responsible for it as the subordinate conservation authority.
