**Vats** is a [former municipality](/source/List_of_former_municipalities_of_Norway) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The 123.7-square-kilometre (47.8 sq mi) municipality existed from 1891 until its dissolution in 1965. The area is now part of [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality) in the [traditional district](/source/Traditional_districts_of_Norway) of [Haugaland](/source/Haugaland). The [administrative centre](/source/Administrative_centre) was the village of [Vats](/source/Vats%2C_Rogaland).[6]

Prior to its dissolution in 1965, the 123.7-square-kilometre (47.8 sq mi) municipality was the 397th largest by area out of the 525 municipalities in Norway. Vats Municipality was the 477th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 1,126. The municipality's [population density](/source/Population_density) was 9.1 inhabitants per square kilometre (24/sq mi) and its population had decreased by 7.3% over the previous 10-year period.[7][8]

## General information

The municipality of Vats was established on 1 January 1891 when [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality) was divided: the eastern part (population: 1,095) became the new Vats Municipality and the western part (population: 1,961) remained as a smaller Skjold Municipality.[9]

On 1 January 1965, the municipality was dissolved due to recommendations of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee) and its lands were divided as follows:[9]

- the Breidal and Stølsvik farms on the south side of the [Yrkefjorden](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yrkefjorden&action=edit&redlink=1) (population: 16) was merged with [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality), [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality), and parts of [Avaldsnes Municipality](/source/Avaldsnes_Municipality), [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality), and [Vikedal Municipality](/source/Vikedal_Municipality) to form a larger [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality)

- the rest of Vats Municipality (population: 1,128) was merged with parts of [Imsland Municipality](/source/Imsland_Municipality), [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality), and [Vikedal Municipality](/source/Vikedal_Municipality), as well as all of [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality) to form the new [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality)

### Name

The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/Prestegjeld)) is named after the old *[Vatne](/source/Vats%2C_Rogaland)* farm ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Vatn*) since the first [Vats Church](/source/Vats_Church) was built there. The name comes from the [dative case](/source/Dative_case) of the word *[vatn](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vatn#Old_Norse)* which means "water", likely referring to the lake know known as [Vatsvatnet](/source/Vatsvatnet).[10]

### Churches

The [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) had one parish (*sokn*) within Vats Municipality. At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Skjold [prestegjeld](/source/Prestegjeld) and the [Karmsund prosti](/source/Karmsund_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Stavanger](/source/Diocese_of_Stavanger).[8]

## Geography

The municipality encompassed the land to the east and west surrounding the [Vatsfjorden](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vatsfjorden&action=edit&redlink=1) and the lake [Vatsvatnet](/source/Vatsvatnet). Vats was typically divided into two parts Øvre Vats (around the lake in the north) and Nedre Vats (around the fjord in the south). The highest point in the municipality was the 735-metre (2,411 ft) tall mountain Døldarheia, located along the border with [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality).[1] [Ølen Municipality](/source/%C3%98len_Municipality) (in [Hordaland](/source/Hordaland) county) was located to the north, [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality) was located to the northeast, [Vikedal Municipality](/source/Vikedal_Municipality) was located to the east, [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality) was located to the south, and [Skjold Municipality](/source/Skjold_Municipality) was located to the west.

## Government

While it existed, Vats Municipality was responsible for [primary education](/source/Primary_education) (through 10th grade), outpatient [health services](/source/Health_care), [senior citizen](/source/Old_age) services, [welfare](/source/Welfare_spending) and other [social services](/source/Social_work), [zoning](/source/Zoning), [economic development](/source/Economic_development), and municipal [roads](/source/Road) and utilities. The municipality was governed by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council_(Norway)) of [directly elected](/source/Direct_election) representatives. The [mayor](/source/Mayor) was [indirectly elected](/source/Indirect_election) by a vote of the municipal council.[11] The municipality was under the jurisdiction of the [Karmsund District Court](/source/Karmsund_District_Court) and the [Gulating Court of Appeal](/source/Gulating_Court_of_Appeal).
