{{About|the name|the musical group|Vásquez (band)|the Cuban village|Vázquez (Puerto Padre)}}

'''Vásquez''' ({{IPA|es|ˈbas.keθ}}; English pronunciation: {{IPAc-en|ˈ|v|æ|s|.|k|ɛ|s}}, {{respell|VASS|kess}}) is a [surname](/source/surname) of [Galician](/source/Galicians) origin, which later spread all over the [Spanish-speaking world](/source/Spanish-speaking_world). Alternative spellings of the name include Vázquez or Vasques (particularly in regions with [seseo](/source/seseo)), and Vasquez or Vazquez (in countries where [Iberian languages](/source/Languages_of_the_Iberian_Peninsula) are not commonly spoken).

==Overview==
To a lesser extent it also occurs in Portuguese-speaking countries (spelled Vasques), where [Vasco](/source/Vasco_(disambiguation)) is also used as a surname. Vasquez means "[son] of Vasco", and Vasco comes from the pre-Roman [latinized name](/source/latinized_name) "Velascus", a name of uncertain origin and meaning, but probably [Basque](/source/Basque_language) or [Iberian](/source/Iberian_language). In Galician-Portuguese the pre-Roman name becomes Velascu > Veascu > Vaasco > Vasco.

In some Spanish-speaking countries, families of non-Iberian ancestry have also adopted this surname. In Colombia and Argentina, there have been instances of "Watzke" and "Watzka" families, of German-Czech descent, Hispanicizing their surnames to "Vasquez". The surname was chosen as being the one most closely resembling their former name; in Italy a similar phenomenon was noted with some "Watzke" changing to "Vasco".{{Citation needed|date=December 2022}}

There are also Spanish cognate surnames [Velasco](/source/Velasco) and [Velázquez/Velazquez](/source/Velazquez).<ref>Ferreiro, M. ''Gramática Histórica Galega'', p. 84, {{ISBN|84-87847-68-4}}</ref>
