'''Validated learning''' is used in [scrum](/source/Scrum_(software_development)). The term was proposed by [Eric Ries](/source/Eric_Ries) in 2011. <ref name="Essential Scrum: Velocity">{{Citation

It is a unit of progress process and describes conclusions generated by trying out an initial idea and then measuring it against potential customers to [validate](/source/Verification_and_validation) the effect. Each test of an idea is a single [iteration](/source/iteration) in a larger process of many iterations whereby something is learnt and then applied to succeeding tests.<ref>{{cite web|last=Ries|first=Eric|title=The Lean Startup|url=http://theleanstartup.com/principles|accessdate=4 September 2012}}</ref> The term coined in the [lean startup](/source/lean_startup) scene, but it can be applied universally.

Validated learning is especially popular on the [web](/source/World_Wide_Web), where [analytics](/source/analytics) software can track visitor behavior and give accurate [statistics](/source/statistics) and insight on how website features work in reality. Validated learning can, however, be applied to anything; one just needs to be innovative on what to use as [metrics](/source/Performance_metric).

Typical steps in validated learning:
# Specify a goal
# Specify a metric that represents the goal
# Act to achieve the goal
# Analyze the metric – did you get closer to the goal?
# Improve and try again

To specify a goal, [SMART target finding](/source/SMART_criteria) could apply.
