'''Valentine Roux''' (born 1956) is a French [archaeologist](/source/archaeologist) specialising in [ceramic](/source/ceramic) production in the [Levant](/source/Levant) between the 5th and 2nd millennium BCE with the aim of identifying the "evolutionary trajectories of ceramic traditions."<ref name=":0">{{cite web|title=Valentine Roux|url=https://www.cnrs.fr/en/node/438|website=CNRS|date=January 2015 |language=en}}</ref>

==Education and career==
Roux was born in [Belleville-sur-Saône](/source/Belleville-sur-Sa%C3%B4ne) in 1956. She studied [prehistory](/source/prehistory) at the [University of Paris](/source/University_of_Paris) and obtained her doctorate in 1983. Her thesis was on the [ethnoarchaeology](/source/ethnoarchaeology) of grinding material in Neolithic Mauritania.<ref name="AcademiaNet" />

She has been affiliated with the [CNRS](/source/CNRS) since 1986, and was appointed a research director there in 2003.<ref name="AcademiaNet">{{cite web |title=Dr. Valentine Roux |url=https://www.academia-net.org/profil/dr-valentine-roux/1403322 |website=AcademiaNet |accessdate=18 November 2020 |language=en}}</ref>

Roux's research "combines [ethnoarchaeology](/source/ethnoarchaeology) in India and archaeology in the Near East." She has devoted much research to developing "reference frameworks, whether about the diagnostic attributes of manufacturing techniques, their properties, the quantification of their constitutive components, the cognitive and motor skills involved, or, more recently, about the conditions favorable to their diffusion." Because her work demands collaborations among interdisciplinary researchers, she has worked and published with others in fields such as geosciences, economics, psychology and sociology.<ref name=":1">{{Cite book|title=Ceramics and Society {{!}} SpringerLink|year=2019 |url=https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-03973-8#about|language=en-gb|doi=10.1007/978-3-030-03973-8|last1=Roux |first1=Valentine |isbn=978-3-030-03972-1 |s2cid=115366396 }}</ref>

Roux has co-edited the ''[Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory](/source/Journal_of_Archaeological_Method_and_Theory)'' since 2019.<ref>{{cite web |title=New Editors 2019 |url=https://www.springer.com/journal/10816/updates/17288170 |website=Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory |publisher=Springer |accessdate=18 November 2020 |language=en}}</ref>

Her book ''Ceramics and Society: A Technological Approach to Archaeological Assemblages'' (2019) "encourages archaeologists to approach processing and recording pottery assemblages differently, moving away from a focus on typology towards understanding pottery from a technological perspective".<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Burke |first1=Clare |title=Valentine Roux, in collaboration with Courty M.-A.
