==Background and early career==
Pyne was second son of George Pyne, of [Curry Mallet](/source/Curry_Mallet), [Somerset](/source/Somerset), of an established legal and gentry family,<ref>Dangerous Talk: Scandalous, Seditious, and Treasonable Speech in Pre-Modern England, David Cressy, Oxford University Press, 2010</ref> who served in the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) on the 1623 expedition to [Cádiz](/source/C%C3%A1diz); Valentine served under his father on this expedition. He was on the expedition to the [Île de Ré](/source/%C3%8Ele_de_R%C3%A9) in 1627, and continued to serve in the Navy until the outbreak of the [English Civil War](/source/English_Civil_War) in 1642, during which he fought under [Charles I](/source/Charles_I_of_England). At the [Restoration](/source/Restoration_(England)), [Charles II](/source/Charles_II_of_England) appointed Pyne lieutenant of the garrison at the [Tower of London](/source/Tower_of_London) in 1661; he later served in the [First Anglo-Dutch War](/source/First_Anglo-Dutch_War) as a Navy commander. In 1666, he succeeded Colonel James Weymes<ref>Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 60</ref> as master gunner of England, serving in this capacity until his death, unmarried, 30 April 1677.<ref>Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 47</ref>
