{{short description|Cell line}}
'''VCaP''' cells are a [cell line](/source/cell_line) of human [prostate cancer](/source/prostate_cancer) commonly used in the field of [oncology](/source/oncology). The tissue was harvested at autopsy from a metastatic lesion to a [lumbar vertebrae](/source/lumbar_vertebrae) of a 59 year old Caucasian male with hormone refractory prostate cancer in 1997, which was then [xenografted](/source/Xenotransplantation) into [SCID mice](/source/Severe_combined_immunodeficient_mice) and later harvested and plated on tissue culture dishes, where it can be propagated as an immortalized prostate cancer cell line.<ref name=Korenchuk>{{cite journal|last1=Korenchuk|first1=S|last2=Lehr|first2=JE|last3=MClean|first3=L|last4=Lee|first4=YG|last5=Whitney|first5=S|last6=Vessella|first6=R|last7=Lin|first7=DL|last8=Pienta|first8=KJ|title=VCaP, a cell-based model system of human prostate cancer.|journal=In Vivo (Athens, Greece)|date=2001|volume=15|issue=2|pages=163–8|pmid=11317522}}</ref>

==Characteristics==
VCaP are an adherent, [epithelial](/source/Epithelium) cell line with high [Androgen receptor](/source/Androgen_receptor) and [Prostate specific antigen](/source/Prostate_specific_antigen) expression.<ref name=Korenchuk/> VCaP are the only prostate cancer cell model that express the [Androgen receptor](/source/Androgen_receptor) splice variant, AR-V7, and the [TMPRSS2](/source/TMPRSS2)-[ERG](/source/ERG_(gene)) gene fusion.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Sprenger|first1=Cynthia C. T.|last2=Plymate|first2=Stephen R.|title=The Link Between Androgen Receptor Splice Variants and Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer|journal=Hormones and Cancer|date=6 May 2014|volume=5|issue=4|pages=207–217|doi=10.1007/s12672-014-0177-y|pmc=4308035|pmid=24798453}}</ref>

The cells have an approximate [doubling time](/source/doubling_time) of 53 hours, and require more specific culture conditions than other prostate cancer cell lines.<ref name=atcc>{{cite web|title=VCaP (ATCC CRL-2876)|url=https://www.atcc.org/Products/All/CRL-2876.aspx#generalinformation|website=ATCC|access-date=25 March 2017}}</ref> VCaP cells are XMRV virus positive and produce the mouse [xenotropic retrovirus](/source/Xenotropic_murine_leukemia_virus%E2%80%93related_virus) Bxv-1, likely acquired during passaging in infected mice.<ref name=atcc/><ref>{{cite journal|last1=Knouf|first1=E.
