Bred and raced by [liquor](/source/liquor) magnate [Harry C. Hatch](/source/Harry_C._Hatch), Uttermost was trained by [Cecil Howard](/source/Cecil_Howard_(horseman)) and ridden by future [Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame](/source/Canadian_Horse_Racing_Hall_of_Fame) [jockey](/source/jockey) [Bobby Watson](/source/Robert_B._Watson).

He was the top two-year-old in Canada and was the country's top horse in 1945 at age three.
