**Utne**[2] is a village in [Ullensvang Municipality](/source/Ullensvang_Municipality) in the [Hardanger](/source/Hardanger) region of [Vestland](/source/Vestland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The village is located on the northern end of the Folgefonna Peninsula, at the [confluence](/source/Confluence) of the [Sørfjorden](/source/S%C3%B8rfjorden_(Hardanger)) and [Hardangerfjorden](/source/Hardangerfjorden). The village is the site of [Utne Church](/source/Utne_Church). The village of [Alsåker](/source/Als%C3%A5ker) lies about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the west on the northern shore of the peninsula and the village of [Vikebygd](/source/Vikebygd%2C_Ullensvang) lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the south along the eastern shore of the peninsula.[3]

Utne is a ferry port with regular ferry routes from [Kinsarvik](/source/Kinsarvik) to Kvanndal via Utne, connecting the two sides of the fjord. Utne is also home to the [Utne Hotel](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Utne_Hotel&action=edit&redlink=1) [[no](https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utne_Hotell)], Norway's oldest hotel in continuous operation, founded in 1722.[4]

## Name

Utne, in [Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language), probably has some [pre-Germanic](/source/Germanic_parent_language) elements (i.e. before approx. 200 CE). Other place-names in the area also has an element of pre-Germanic and unknown origins.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] It has been suggested that it derives from "Út-tún", meaning the hamlet or farmstead that is "out". This fits with the village's position at the tip of a peninsula that sticks out into the [Hardangerfjorden](/source/Hardangerfjorden). This is however uncertain.[5]
