# Utakura River

The **Utakura River** is a river of the [Northland Region](/source/Northland_Region) of [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand)'s [North Island](/source/North_Island). It flows west from its sources northwest of [Kaikohe](/source/Kaikohe), reaching the [Waihou River](/source/Waihou_River_(Northland)) at the point where it widens to become an arm of the [Hokianga Harbour](/source/Hokianga_Harbour).

[Long](/source/New_Zealand_longfin_eel) and [short-fin](/source/Short-finned_eel) eels, [smelt](/source/New_Zealand_smelt), [īnanga](/source/Common_galaxias), [torrentfish](/source/Torrentfish) and [redfin bully](/source/Redfin_bully) live in the river.[1] The river is assessed as fair, in a scale between good and poor,[2] as it suffers from [turbidity](/source/Secchi_disk) and [e-coli](/source/Escherichia_coli) and [phosphorus](/source/Water_pollution#Inorganic_contaminants) pollution.[3]
