# Useful Island

**Useful Island** ([64°43′S 62°52′W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=64_43_S_62_52_W)) is an [island](/source/Island) 3.2 km (2 miles) west of [Rongé Island](/source/Rong%C3%A9_Island), with a string of rocks between, lying in [Gerlache Strait](/source/Gerlache_Strait) off the west coast of [Graham Land](/source/Graham_Land). It was discovered by the [Belgian Antarctic Expedition](/source/Belgian_Antarctic_Expedition), 1897–99, under [Adrien de Gerlache](/source/Adrien_de_Gerlache). The name appears on a chart based upon a 1927 survey by [Discovery Investigations](/source/Discovery_Investigations) personnel on the [RRS *Discovery*](/source/RRS_Discovery).

## Geography

The bedrock is Mesozoic granite.

## Bird Life

[Gentoo](/source/Gentoo_penguin) and [chinstrap penguins](/source/Chinstrap_penguins) have [rookeries](/source/Rookery) on the top of the island.
