# Urutonga

In the [mythology](/source/M%C4%81ori_mythology) of some [Māori](/source/M%C4%81ori_people) tribal groups, '''Urutonga''' is the wife of [Hemā](/source/Hem%C4%81_(mythology)), and the mother of [Tāwhaki](/source/T%C4%81whaki) and [Kahiri](/source/Karihi).<ref>{{cite book |url=https://archive.org/details/pacificmythology0000knap |title=Pacific mythology : an encyclopedia of myth and legend |author=Jan Knappert |publisher=Diamond Books |location=London |year=1995 |page=314 }}</ref>

Hema was killed by the [Ponaturi](/source/Ponaturi), and Urutonga and her sons, Tāwhaki and Karihi, killed them all but two in revenge. They tricked the Ponaturi into entering a house, and then locked them in, claiming there was still time before the dawn. They then opened the door after the sun was up, the Ponaturi died at the exposure to sunlight.
