**Ursula Vernon** (born May 28, 1977) is an American writer, artist, and illustrator. She has won numerous awards for her work in various mediums, including [Hugo Awards](/source/Hugo_Award) for her graphic novel *[Digger](/source/Digger_(webcomic))*, fantasy novel *[Nettle & Bone](/source/Nettle_%26_Bone)*, and fantasy novella *[Thornhedge](/source/Thornhedge)*; the [Nebula Award](/source/Nebula_Award) for her short story "[Jackalope Wives](/source/Jackalope_Wives)"; and [Mythopoeic Awards](/source/Mythopoeic_Awards) for adult and children's literature. Vernon's books for children include *Hamster Princess* and *Dragonbreath*. Under the name **T. Kingfisher**, she is also the author of books for older audiences. She writes short fiction under both names.

## Life and career

Ursula Vernon was born in [Japan](/source/Japan) to a military family and grew up in [Oregon](/source/Oregon) and [Arizona](/source/Arizona).[2][3] She studied [anthropology](/source/Anthropology) at [Macalester College](/source/Macalester_College) in [Saint Paul, Minnesota](/source/Saint_Paul%2C_Minnesota), where she first took art classes.[2]

She first became known for her [webcomics](/source/Webcomic) and as a freelance artist, particularly for her works containing [anthropomorphic](/source/Anthropomorphism) animals. She then moved into writing and illustrating children's books, her first being published in 2008, and then books for adults under the pseudonym T. Kingfisher.[3] She started using the pseudonym in order to avoid confusion for parents who were only familiar with her as a children's book author.[4] She chose it both because she loves [kingfishers](/source/Kingfisher) and as an homage to [Ursula K. Le Guin](/source/Ursula_K._Le_Guin), who once joked that the initials "U.K." could stand for "Ulysses Kingfisher".[5] Vernon has published short fiction under both names, and has won a number of awards for them including the [Hugo Award](/source/Hugo_Award) and [Nebula Award](/source/Nebula_Award).[3]

She regularly attends [conventions](/source/Convention_(meeting)) to exhibit and sell her work. She was a guest of honor at [Midwest FurFest](/source/Midwest_FurFest) 2004 and 2009,[6][7] and the Artist Guest of Honor at [Further Confusion](/source/Further_Confusion) 2010.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] In August 2014, Vernon was the Author Guest of Honor for [Mythcon](/source/Mythcon) 45[8] and a Guest of Honor at [Eurofurence](/source/Eurofurence) 20.[9] She was the Author Guest of Honor at [Arisia](/source/Arisia) 2017.[10]

The game *Black Sheep* designed by [Reiner Knizia](/source/Reiner_Knizia) and published by [Fantasy Flight Games](/source/Fantasy_Flight_Games) uses art by Vernon on its playing cards.[11] Her artwork titled *The Biting Pear of Salamanca* became an [internet meme](/source/Internet_meme) in the form of the "LOL WUT pear".[12]

In June 2023, Vernon announced she had been diagnosed with [breast cancer](/source/Breast_cancer);[13] by December of that year, she announced that her treatment had been successful and she was cancer-free.[14]
