The **Union of Democrats for Development** ([French](/source/French_language): *Union des Démocrates pour le Développment*, UDD) was a political party in the [Comoros](/source/Comoros) led by [Ibrahim Halidi](/source/Ibrahim_Halidi). Based on [Anjouan](/source/Anjouan), it was supportive of the government of President [Said Mohamed Djohar](/source/Said_Mohamed_Djohar).[1]

## History

The party was established in December 1991 by Ibrahim Halidi, Saïd Mohamed Djohar[2] and Mohamed Dhakoine Abdou. The party's emblem was a black umbrella.

In the [1992 parliamentary elections](/source/1992_Comorian_parliamentary_election) the UDD finished second in the popular vote, but emerged as the largest party in the [Assembly of the Union](/source/Assembly_of_the_Union_of_the_Comoros), winning seven of the 42 seats. Following the elections Halidi was appointed prime minister.[3]

Prior to the [early parliamentary elections](/source/1993_Comorian_parliamentary_election) in 1993 the UDD formed an alliance with the newly established [Rally for Democracy and Renewal](/source/Rally_for_Democracy_and_Renewal) (RDR) created by Djohar.[4][5] The RDR won 28 of the 42 seats in the Assembly.
