'''Undredal'''<ref name="name">{{Cite web |title=Informasjon om stadnamn |url=https://stadnamn.kartverket.no/fakta/130108 |access-date=2025-11-23 |website=Norgeskart |publisher=[Kartverket](/source/Norwegian_Mapping_Authority) |language=no}}</ref> is a small village in [Aurland Municipality](/source/Aurland_Municipality) in [Vestland](/source/Vestland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The popular tourist destination of Undredal is located along the [Aurlandsfjorden](/source/Aurlandsfjorden) which is a branch off the massive [Sognefjorden](/source/Sognefjorden) in Norway's "fjord-country." It sits along the Aurlandsfjorden, about {{convert|5|km}} south of the mouth to the [Nærøyfjord](/source/N%C3%A6r%C3%B8yfjord). Undredal is home to the smallest [stave church](/source/stave_church) in [Northern Europe](/source/Northern_Europe), [Undredal Stave Church](/source/Undredal_Stave_Church). This little village was mentioned in [Rick Steves](/source/Rick_Steves)' show about Norway.

==Economy==
With a population of approximately 100 people and 500 goats, Undredal is famous for the brown goat cheese ([geitost](/source/Brunost)) that is still produced the traditional way. The production of cheese is important to the local economy as eight farms produce {{convert|10|to|12|ST|kg|lk=on}} of cheese each year. Goat sausage is also produced locally.

==History==
Historically, Undredal was first mentioned when the Bishop of the [Diocese of Bjørgvin](/source/Catholic_Diocese_of_Bergen) ([Bergen](/source/Bergen_(city))) placed [Pål Bårdson](/source/P%C3%A5l_B%C3%A5rdson), a known scholar, there as a representative of the church. Pål Bårdson was the Chancellor to the court of [King Magnus](/source/Magnus_IV_of_Sweden), and he later was the [Archbishop of Nidaros](/source/Archbishop_of_Nidaros) ([Trondheim](/source/Trondheim_(city))) from 1333 until 1346. The [Undredal Stave Church](/source/Undredal_Stave_Church) can be dated back to 1147.

===Access===
Prior to 1988, Undredal was only accessible by boat, but since then a road connection has been made by constructing two lengthy tunnels as part of the [European route E16](/source/European_route_E16) highway. The [Gudvanga Tunnel](/source/Gudvanga_Tunnel) leads southwest to the village of [Gudvangen](/source/Gudvangen) and the [Flenja Tunnel](/source/Flenja_Tunnel) goes to the villages of [Flåm](/source/Fl%C3%A5m) and [Aurlandsvangen](/source/Aurlandsvangen) to the northeast. There is a brief {{convert|700|m|adj=on}} long length of road between the tunnels that has an access road to Undredal {{convert|6.5|km}} to the north.
