**Ultima Genomics, Inc.** is an American [biotechnology company](/source/Biotechnology_company) that develops and manufactures systems for [high-throughput](/source/High-throughput_biology) [DNA sequencing](/source/DNA_sequencing).

## History

Ultima Genomics was founded in 2016 by Gilad Almogy, an Israeli-born American engineer and former head of the [display](/source/Electronic_visual_display) group at [Applied Materials](/source/Applied_Materials).[1] In May 2022, the company announced that it had raised $600 million in [venture capital](/source/Venture_capital) from investors including [General Atlantic](/source/General_Atlantic), [Andreessen Horowitz](/source/Andreessen_Horowitz), [Khosla Ventures](/source/Khosla_Ventures), [Lightspeed](/source/Lightspeed_Venture_Partners), [Playground Global](/source/Playground_Global), [D1 Capital](/source/D1_Capital_Partners), and [Founders Fund](/source/Founders_Fund).[2] Together with the funding announcement, Ultima released sequencing data collected using the company's technology in pilot partnerships with researchers at the [Broad Institute](/source/Broad_Institute), [Whitehead Institute](/source/Whitehead_Institute), [Baylor College of Medicine](/source/Baylor_College_of_Medicine), [Stanford University School of Medicine](/source/Stanford_University_School_of_Medicine), and [New York Genome Center](/source/New_York_Genome_Center).[2]

## UG 100 platform

In 2024, Ultima launched the UG 100 sequencing platform, claiming it to be capable of sequencing 20,000 [human genomes](/source/Human_genome) per year with [variant calling](/source/SNV_calling_from_NGS_data) accuracy matching or exceeding that of competitor [Illumina](/source/Illumina%2C_Inc.)'s sequencing instruments.[3][4] The UG 100 replaces a traditional [flow cell](/source/Massive_parallel_sequencing) with a flat circular [silicon wafer](/source/Wafer_(electronics)) disk. During sequencing, the disk spins to dispense reagents while two fixed-position cameras continuously acquire data. A ≥300-[base](/source/Nucleotide_base) median-length run takes approximately 20 hours to complete.[5]

The UG 100's chemistry differs from [traditional sequencing-by-synthesis methods](/source/Illumina_dye_sequencing) in that only one [nucleotide](/source/Nucleotide) species is introduced per data capture cycle, or "flow," eliminating the need for [base calling](/source/Base_calling).[5] This flow-based readout results in a distribution of [read](/source/Read_(biology)) lengths, with a median length of at least 300 bases, or approximately 250 bases after [quality-control](/source/Quality-control) filtering. With yields of 10-12 billion reads per wafer, this translates to approximately 2.5-3.0 terabases of usable data per run.[5][6]

## Partnerships

In 2025, Ultima announced it was partnering with [Arc Institute](/source/Arc_Institute) to support Arc's [virtual cell](/source/Virtual_cell) atlas and competition.[7]
