**Ulaankhus** ([Mongolian](/source/Mongolian_language): Улаанхус [\[ʊɮáɴχʊs\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Mongolian)) is a [district](/source/Districts_of_Mongolia) of [Bayan-Ölgii Province](/source/Bayan-%C3%96lgii_Province) in western [Mongolia](/source/Mongolia). The seat of the district is [Bilüü](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bil%C3%BC%C3%BC&action=edit&redlink=1), situated 46 kilometres (29 mi) west of [Ölgii](/source/%C3%96lgii_(city)), and 1,682 kilometres (1,045 mi) from [Ulaanbaatar](/source/Ulaanbaatar). It is primarily inhabited by ethnic [Kazakhs](/source/Kazakhs). As of 2014, it had a population of 8,010.[1]

## History

Historically, Ulaankhus was settled by Kazakhs who moved to the northern side of the [Altai Mountains](/source/Altai_Mountains). In 1922, Sherushy [khoshuun](/source/Kozhuun) with the canter in Akbalshyk, currently Bilüü, was established. In 1922, it was split into Sherushy and Shebaraigyr, and in 1925 into Sherushy, Shebaraigyr, Botakara, and Zhantekey. These khoshuuns belonged to [Khovd Province](/source/Khovd_Province). In 1938, Sherushy khoshuun was renamed Ulaankhus sum. In 1940, Bayan-Ölgii Province was established, and the sum was subordinated to this province.[2]

## Geography

Ulaankhus sum borders the [Altai Republic](/source/Altai_Republic) of Russia to the north, [Tsagaannuur](/source/Tsagaannuur%2C_Bayan-%C3%96lgii) to the northeast, [Bugat](/source/Bugat%2C_Bayan-%C3%96lgii) to the east, [Sagsai](/source/Sagsai) to the southeast, [Altay Prefecture](/source/Altay_Prefecture) of [Xinjiang](/source/Xinjiang), China to the southwest, and [Tsengel](/source/Tsengel%2C_Bayan-%C3%96lgii) to the west. The sum is covered by hills and mountains, with 90% of the area lying at altitudes above 2,500 metres (8,200 ft). The highest point is the [Besbogda Mountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Besbogda_Mountain&action=edit&redlink=1) (4,374 metres (14,350 ft)).[2]

The sum contains the [Tsengel Khairkhan](/source/Tsengel_Khairkhan) mountain, with an elevation of 3,967 metres (13,015 ft).[3] The [Khovd River](/source/Khovd_River) flows through the district, flowing through the town of [Bilüü](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bil%C3%BC%C3%BC&action=edit&redlink=1).[4]

## Landmarks

[Bilüü](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bil%C3%BC%C3%BC&action=edit&redlink=1) contains the Nurbergen Supermarket, a branch of the [Khan Bank](/source/Khan_Bank), a small stadium, a hotel,[4] a school and a hospital.

## Culture

More than 60 [Pazyryk culture](/source/Pazyryk_culture) burials were discovered in Ulaankhus and [Tsengel](/source/Tsengel%2C_Bayan-%C3%96lgii) sums during an expedition in 2004.[6] The area contains numerous rock paintings of hunters.[7]
