# Ugo Matania

Italian artist (1888–1963)

**Ugo Matania** (1888–1979) was an Italian artist and illustrator active in Britain during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), particularly noted for his works for *[The Sphere](/source/The_Sphere_(newspaper))* and *[The London Magazine](/source/The_London_Magazine#1898–1933)*.[1] Three of his oil paintings and one of his watercolours are in the [Wellcome Collection](/source/Wellcome_Collection) in London.[2]

## Life

He was born in [Naples](/source/Naples), the nephew of [Eduardo Matania](/source/Eduardo_Matania) and the first cousin of [Fortunino Matania](/source/Fortunino_Matania), both also artists.[3] In 1911 he received a degree in Advertising Diagram and Design[4] and two years later moved to London, remaining there until 1924.[4]

On his return to Italy he worked for *[Corriere della Sera](/source/Corriere_della_Sera)* and their fortnightly magazine *[Il Romanzo per Tutti](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Il_Romanzo_per_Tutti&action=edit&redlink=1)*.[4] He was still exhibiting in 1948[5] and also produced marble stations of the cross for the [church of Maria Santissima del Carmine](/source/Church_of_Maria_Santissima_del_Carmine%2C_Castellammare_di_Stabia) in [Castellammare di Stabia](/source/Castellammare_di_Stabia).[6]
