thumb|right|Ueda Castle, administrative centre of Ueda Domain
{{nihongo|'''Ueda Domain'''|上田藩|Ueda-han}} was a [feudal domain](/source/Han_(Japan)) under the [Tokugawa shogunate](/source/Tokugawa_shogunate) of [Edo period](/source/Edo_period) [Japan](/source/Japan). It is located in [Shinano Province](/source/Shinano_Province), [Honshū](/source/Honsh%C5%AB). The domain was centered at [Ueda Castle](/source/Ueda_Castle), located in what is now part of the city of [Ueda](/source/Ueda%2C_Nagano) in [Nagano Prefecture](/source/Nagano_Prefecture).<ref name="explorer">[http://www.japanese-castle-explorer.com/province.html?name=Shinano "Shinano Province" at JapaneseCastleExplorer.com]; retrieved 2013-6-25.</ref>

==History==
The [Sanada clan](/source/Sanada_clan) had ruled [Chiisagata District](/source/Chiisagata_District%2C_Nagano) in Shinano Province during the [Sengoku period](/source/Sengoku_period) under the [Takeda clan](/source/Takeda_clan) and subsequently most of northern Shinano and [Kōzuke Province](/source/K%C5%8Dzuke_Province) as retainers of [Toyotomi Hideyoshi](/source/Toyotomi_Hideyoshi). Ueda Castle was the site of two battles between the Sanada and the [Tokugawa clan](/source/Tokugawa_clan), notably the [Siege of Ueda](/source/Siege_of_Ueda) in 1600 when [Sanada Masayuki](/source/Sanada_Masayuki) with a force of 2000 men held off [Tokugawa Hidetada](/source/Tokugawa_Hidetada)'s invading force of 38,000 men for so long that they arrived late for then [Battle of Sekigahara](/source/Battle_of_Sekigahara). Following the establishment of the [Tokugawa shogunate](/source/Tokugawa_shogunate), [Sanada Nobuyuki](/source/Sanada_Nobuyuki) was confirmed as ''[daimyō](/source/daimy%C5%8D)'' with Ueda Domain, with holdings assessed at 95,000 ''[koku](/source/koku)''. However, in 1622 the clan was transferred to [Matsushiro Domain](/source/Matsushiro_Domain).

The Sanada were replaced at Ueda by Sengoku Tadamasa, formerly of [Komoro Domain](/source/Komoro_Domain), with a reduction to 60,000 ''koku''. However, Tadamasa died in 1628 before his plans to rebuild Ueda castle were realised, and his son Sengoku Tadatoshi became embroiled in a dispute over land surveys. His son, Sengoku Masaakira reduced the domain by giving 2000 ''koku'' to his younger brother before he was transferred to [Izushi Domain](/source/Izushi_Domain) in [Tajima Province](/source/Tajima_Province) in 1706.

Ueda Domain was then given to [Matsudaira Tadachika](/source/Matsudaira_Tadachika), with an assessed ''kokudaka'' of 58,000 ''koku''. Matsudaira Tadachika served in many important roles within the administration of [Tokugawa Ieshige](/source/Tokugawa_Ieshige), including ''[Kyoto shoshidai](/source/Kyoto_shoshidai)'' from 1717 through 1724 and ''[rōjū](/source/r%C5%8Dj%C5%AB)'' in 1724, His son, Matsudaira Tadazane, gave 5000 ''koku'' to his younger brother, reducing the domain to 53,000 ''koku''. The Matsudaira clan remained in control of the domain to the [Meiji restoration](/source/Meiji_restoration).

During the [Boshin War](/source/Boshin_War), the domain sided with the imperial side, and sent forces to fight in the [Battle of Hokuetsu](/source/Battle_of_Hokuetsu) and [Battle of Aizu](/source/Battle_of_Aizu). In July 1871, with the [abolition of the han system](/source/abolition_of_the_han_system), Ueda Domain briefly became Ueda Prefecture, and was merged into the newly created [Nagano Prefecture](/source/Nagano_Prefecture). Under the new [Meiji government](/source/Meiji_government), Matsudaira Tadanari, the last daimyo of Ueda Domain went to study at [Rutgers University](/source/Rutgers_University) and was given the ''[kazoku](/source/kazoku)'' peerage title of ''shishaku'' ([viscount](/source/viscount)).

==Bakumatsu period holdings==
As with most domains in the [han system](/source/han_system), Ueda Domain consisted of several discontinuous territories calculated to provide the assigned ''[kokudaka](/source/kokudaka)'', based on periodic [cadastral](/source/cadastral) surveys and projected agricultural yields.<ref>[Mass, Jeffrey P.](/source/Jeffrey_Mass) and William B.
