# USS Permit

Two ships of the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) have borne the name **USS *Permit***, named in honor of the [permit](/source/Permit_(fish)), a food fish, often called "round [pompano](/source/Pompano)", found in waters from [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) to [Brazil](/source/Brazil).

- The first [USS *Permit* (SS-178)](/source/USS_Permit_(SS-178)), was a [*Porpoise*-class](/source/United_States_Porpoise-class_submarine) [submarine](/source/Submarine), commissioned in 1937 and stricken in 1956.

- The second [USS *Permit* (SSN-594)](/source/USS_Permit_(SSN-594)), was a submarine of the [*Permit* class](/source/Permit-class_submarine) (originally the "*Thresher*" class, until [USS *Thresher*](/source/USS_Thresher_(SSN-593)) was lost in 1963). *Permit* was commissioned in 1962 and stricken in 1991.
