# USS Manitou

The US Navy has operated three vessels named ***Manitou***, after the [Algonquian](/source/Algonquian_languages) term for a holy spirit.

- [USS *Fort Hindman*](/source/USS_Fort_Hindman), a steamship briefly named *Manitou* in 1863
- [USS *Worcester* (1866)](/source/USS_Worcester_(1866)), a [*Contoocook*-class sloop](/source/Contoocook-class_sloop) laid down as *Manitou*
- [USS *Manito II*](/source/USS_Manito_II), a patrol vessel which retained her civilian name
