# USS Beloit

'*USS*Beloit*(LCS-29)**is a [*Freedom*-class littoral combat ship](/source/Freedom-class_littoral_combat_ship) [littoral combat ship](/source/Littoral_combat_ship) of the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy).[7] She is the first commissioned ship in naval service named after [Beloit, Wisconsin](/source/Beloit,_Wisconsin). This honors the contributions Beloit has made to the US Navy, especially the engines built in its [Fairbanks Morse](/source/Fairbanks_Morse) plant, including USS*****Beloit**s own powerplant.[8][9][10]

## Design

In 2002, the US Navy initiated a program to develop the first of a fleet of [littoral combat ships](/source/Littoral_combat_ship).[11] The Navy initially ordered two monohull ships from [Lockheed Martin](/source/Lockheed_Martin), which became known as the *Freedom*-class littoral combat ships after the first ship of the class, [USS *Freedom*](/source/USS_Freedom_(LCS-1)).[11][12] Odd-numbered U.S. Navy littoral combat ships are built using the *Freedom*-class monohull design, while even-numbered ships are based on a competing design, the [trimaran](/source/Trimaran) hull [*Independence*-class littoral combat ship](/source/Independence-class_littoral_combat_ship) from [General Dynamics](/source/General_Dynamics).[11] The initial order of littoral combat ships involved a total of four ships, including two of the *Freedom*-class design.[11] *Beloit* is the fifteenth *Freedom*-class littoral combat ship to be built.

## Construction and career

[Marinette Marine](/source/Marinette_Marine) was awarded the contract to build *Beloit* on 18 September 2018.[5][7] She was [christened](/source/Ship_christening) and [launched](/source/Ship_launch) on 7 May 2022 at the shipyard in [Marinette, Wisconsin](/source/Marinette,_Wisconsin).[2] The ship's [sponsor](/source/Ship_sponsor) is Beloit-born Major General [Marcia Anderson](/source/Marcia_Anderson), (USAR, Ret.). Now retired, she was the first African-American woman to reach the rank of [Major General](/source/Major_general_(United_States)) in the [US Army](/source/US_Army), [US Army Reserve](/source/US_Army_Reserve) and the [US Army National Guard](/source/US_Army_National_Guard).[13]

*Beloit* successfully completed her acceptance trials in August 2024[14] and was commissioned in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 23 November 2024.[3]
