'''UNIMA''' (''Union Internationale de la Marionnette'' – International Puppetry Association) is an international non-governmental organization that brings together puppeteers and puppet enthusiasts to develop and promote the art of [puppetry](/source/puppetry). It was founded in [Prague](/source/Prague) in 1929<ref>[Bibliothèque nationale de France](/source/Biblioth%C3%A8que_nationale_de_France) : http://data.bnf.fr/11866570/union_internationale_de_la_marionnette/</ref> (the then Czechoslovak magazine [Loutkář](/source/Loutk%C3%A1%C5%99) was UNIMA's first official journal in years 1929–1930). In 1981, the French puppeteer Jacques Félix moved UNIMA's headquarters to [Charleville-Mézières](/source/Charleville-M%C3%A9zi%C3%A8res), France, location of the ''Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes'' since 1972. UNIMA is affiliated to [UNESCO](/source/UNESCO)<ref>[UNESCO](/source/UNESCO) : http://ngo-db.unesco.org/r/or/en/1100064631 {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140714152941/http://ngo-db.unesco.org/r/or/en/1100064631 |date=2014-07-14 }}</ref> and it is a member of the [International Theatre Institute](/source/International_Theatre_Institute). UNIMA is affiliated with the International Theatre Institute and is present in 87 countries. Its headquarters is located in Charleville-Mézières.

== History ==
UNIMA was founded on May 20, 1929, in [Prague](/source/Prague), during the 5th Congress of Czech Puppeteers, upon the proposal of French writer Paul Jeanne.<ref>UNIMA : http://www.unima.org/fr/unima/historique/</ref> The Czech magazine ''[Loutkář](/source/Loutk%C3%A1%C5%99)'' served as its official journal from 1929 to 1930. The last UNIMA congress before [World War II](/source/World_War_II) took place in 1933 in [Ljubljana](/source/Ljubljana).

After the war, UNIMA was revived in 1957 by the [Czechoslovaks](/source/Czechoslovaks) during the European Puppet Week in [Braunschweig](/source/Braunschweig) (then in [West Germany](/source/West_Germany)). Jan Malík, who had been its Secretary-General before the war, led discussions to revive the association. A congress was held the same year in Prague, with 17 countries represented (from the [United States](/source/United_States) to [North Korea](/source/North_Korea), in the context of the [Cold War](/source/Cold_War)), establishing statutes that ensured equal representation of countries from the West and the East in the presidium.

In the 1970s, the association modernized: the presidium became the executive committee, and UNIMA moved its headquarters from Prague to [Warsaw](/source/Warsaw), where it remained for eight years. The headquarters was then established in [Charleville-Mézières](/source/Charleville-M%C3%A9zi%C3%A8res), known for its [World Festival of Puppet Theatre](/source/World_Festival_of_Puppet_Theatre), and where the [International Puppet Institute](/source/%3Afr%3A_Institut_international_de_la_marionnette) and the [École nationale supérieure des arts de la marionnette](/source/%3Afr%3A_%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_des_arts_de_la_marionnette) later settled.
