'''Unc-51-like kinase 2 (C. elegans)''' also known as '''ULK2''' is an [enzyme](/source/enzyme) which in humans is encoded by the ''ULK2'' [gene](/source/gene).<ref name="pmid10557072">{{cite journal | vauthors = Yan J, Kuroyanagi H, Tomemori T, Okazaki N, Asato K, Matsuda Y, Suzuki Y, Ohshima Y, Mitani S, Masuho Y, Shirasawa T, Muramatsu M | title = Mouse ULK2, a novel member of the UNC-51-like protein kinases: unique features of functional domains | journal = Oncogene | volume = 18 | issue = 43 | pages = 5850–9 |date=October 1999 | pmid = 10557072 | doi = 10.1038/sj.onc.1202988 | doi-access = free }}</ref> The gene is located within the [Smith–Magenis syndrome](/source/Smith%E2%80%93Magenis_syndrome) region on chromosome 17.

== Structure and function ==

This gene encodes a protein that is similar to a [serine/threonine kinase](/source/Serine%2Fthreonine-specific_protein_kinase) in ''[C. elegans](/source/Caenorhabditis_elegans)'' which is involved in [axon](/source/axon)al elongation. The structure of this protein is similar to the ''C. elegans'' protein in that both proteins have an [N-terminal](/source/N-terminus) kinase domain, a central [proline](/source/proline)/[serine](/source/serine) rich (PS) domain, and a [C-terminal](/source/C-terminus) (C) domain.<ref name="entrez">{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: ULK2 | url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=9706}}</ref> ULK2 and the [GTPase](/source/GTPase) activating protein [SynGAP](/source/SYNGAP1) function cooperatively in [axon](/source/axon) formation.<ref name="pmid15014045">{{cite journal | vauthors = Tomoda T, Kim JH, Zhan C, Hatten ME | title = Role of Unc51.1 and its binding partners in CNS axon outgrowth | journal = Genes Dev. | volume = 18 | issue = 5 | pages = 541–58 |date=March 2004 | pmid = 15014045 | pmc = 374236 | doi = 10.1101/gad.1151204 }}</ref>
