'''UK Records''' was a music [label](/source/record_label) from the 1970s.

==History==

The label was launched in 1972 by [Jonathan King](/source/Jonathan_King) to distribute his own releases and those by some other artists.<ref name=billboard>[https://books.google.com/books?id=4icEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA32 "King forms U.K. Records"], ''Billboard'', 9 September 1972, p. 32. Retrieved 20 January 2014</ref> The abbreviation UK stands for "United King". The label was distributed at first by [Decca Records](/source/Decca_Records) and, after 1976, by [PolyGram](/source/PolyGram) (which later bought out Decca in 1980).

When the label was established, its UK operations were first run by [Chris Denning](/source/Chris_Denning),<ref name=billboard/> then by former DJ Don Wardell and by [John Peel](/source/John_Peel)'s [Dandelion Records](/source/Dandelion_Records) chief, Clive Selwood.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.peterowenpublishers.com/books/all-the-moves-but-none-of-the-licks |title=All the Moves (But none of the licks) | Peter Owen Publishers |access-date=2014-07-23 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141204214422/http://www.peterowenpublishers.com/books/all-the-moves-but-none-of-the-licks |archive-date=4 December 2014 |df=dmy-all }}</ref> Its releases included [UK singles chart](/source/UK_singles_chart) hits for [Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs](/source/Terry_Dactyl_and_the_Dinosaurs) (fronted by [Jona Lewie](/source/Jona_Lewie)), [10cc](/source/10cc), and Shag, a [pseudonym](/source/pseudonym) used by King himself. The label's only [UK no.1 record](/source/List_of_UK_Singles_Chart_number_ones) was 10cc's "[Rubber Bullets](/source/Rubber_Bullets)"; eight of the band's singles were released by the label.<ref name="Thompson2002">{{cite book|author=Dave Thompson|title=The Music Lover's Guide to Record Collecting|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=tVVMAgAAQBAJ&pg=PT465|access-date=20 January 2014|date=1 September 2002|publisher=Backbeat Books|isbn=978-1-61713-202-5|pages=465–467}}</ref> The UK label also released successful singles by [the First Class](/source/the_First_Class), [Carl Malcolm](/source/Carl_Malcolm), [Kevin Johnson](/source/Kevin_Johnson_(singer)), [Roy C](/source/Roy_C), [Lobo](/source/Lobo_(musician)), and by Jonathan King himself, as well as recording [Freddie Garrity](/source/Freddie_Garrity) and [the Kursaal Flyers](/source/the_Kursaal_Flyers) among others. Successful albums included two by 10cc (''[10cc](/source/10cc_(album))'' and ''[Sheet Music](/source/Sheet_Music_(10cc_album))''), as well as the King-produced Original London Stage Soundtrack of ''[The Rocky Horror Show](/source/The_Rocky_Horror_Show)''.

The label was dissolved in the 1970s.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://companycheck.co.uk/director/901136799/KENNETH-GEORGE-KING/companies|title=MR KENNETH GEORGE KING : Companies|website=Companycheck.co.uk|access-date=2020-05-02}}</ref>
