He then joined [Northampton Saints](/source/Northampton_Saints)[1] academy for five months but on their relegation most of the academy players were cut and he returned to South Africa. He played for the [Stormers](/source/Stormers) in [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby)[2] and for [Western Province](/source/Western_Province_Rugby_Union) in the [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup) and [Vodacom Cup](/source/Vodacom_Cup), as well as the [Griquas](/source/Griquas_(rugby)) and [Cornish Pirates](/source/Cornish_Pirates). Holmes helped Western Province win the Vodacom Cup for the first time in 2012, he made nine appearances and scored two tries. He also played his first [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby) game later in the season.[3] As a result of a loose forward injury crisis, Holmes debuted against the [Lions](/source/Lions_(Super_rugby_franchise)) on 30 June 2012. He started the game in the number 6 jersey and was replaced in the 52nd minute by [Tiaan Liebenberg](/source/Tiaan_Liebenberg) in a 27–17 Stormers win.[4] After the [2012 Currie Cup Premier Division](/source/2012_Currie_Cup_Premier_Division) season, he joined Italian [National Championship of Excellence](/source/Top12) team [Petrarca Rugby](/source/Petrarca_Rugby) for one season. Holmes then moved to [Glasgow Warriors](/source/Glasgow_Warriors)[5] for the start of season 2013–14. He was part of the Glasgow side's 2014–2015 [Pro12](/source/Pro14) league championship winning season. Following his release from Glasgow, Holmes signed for [Newcastle Falcons](/source/Newcastle_Falcons) in the [Aviva Premiership](/source/Aviva_Premiership) from the 2016–17 season.[6] ### International career Holmes is eligible to play for Scotland as his father was Scottish.[7] His grandfather played for [Peebles RFC](/source/Peebles_RFC).[1] He was named in the [Scotland A](/source/Scotland_A_national_rugby_union_team) squad for their match against [England Saxons](/source/England_Saxons) on 31 January 2014,[8] helping them to a 13–13 draw.[9] This confirmed his Scottish nationality under World Rugby rules.
