Tyrolite forms glassy, blue to green [orthorhombic](/source/orthorhombic_crystal_system) radial crystals and [botryoidal](/source/botryoidal) masses. It has a [Mohs hardness](/source/Mohs_hardness) of 1.5–2.0 and a [specific gravity](/source/relative_density) of 3.1–3.2. It is [translucent](/source/transparency_and_translucency) with [refractive indices](/source/refractive_index) of ''n''α&nbsp;=&nbsp;1.694, ''n''β&nbsp;=&nbsp;1.726, and ''n''γ&nbsp;=&nbsp;1.730.

It is a secondary mineral formed by the weathering of associated copper and arsenic minerals. It was first described in 1845 for an occurrence in [Schwaz](/source/Schwaz), [Tyrol](/source/county_of_Tyrol), [Austria](/source/Austria).
