Species of crustacean

Typhlatya Typhlatya arfeae Scientific classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Clade: Pancrustacea Class: Malacostraca Order: Decapoda Suborder: Pleocyemata Infraorder: Caridea Family: Atyidae Genus: Typhlatya Creaser, 1936[1]

***Typhlatya*** is a genus of [shrimp](/source/Caridea) in the family [Atyidae](/source/Atyidae). These are small, [stygobitic](/source/Stygofauna) shrimp found in the West [Mediterranean](/source/Mediterranean) region (France and Spain), Caribbean region (the [Antilles](/source/Antilles), [Bahamas](/source/Bahamas) and [Yucatán](/source/Yucat%C3%A1n_Peninsula)), [Ascension Island](/source/Ascension_Island) and the [Galápagos](/source/Gal%C3%A1pagos), although the individual species often have very small ranges.[2][3] Species in this genus are found in salt, [brackish](/source/Brackish) and fresh waters,[3] mostly in [anchialine](/source/Anchialine) habitats and none in the open sea.[2]

## Taxonomy, species and conservation

There are currently 17 recognized species, of which one is listed by the [IUCN](/source/IUCN) as [critically endangered](/source/Critically_endangered) (marked "CR" below), and six are considered [vulnerable](/source/Vulnerable_species) (marked "VU").[4] [Phylogenetic](/source/Phylogenetic) studies indicate that the genus as presently defined is [paraphyletic](/source/Paraphyletic) and needs to be redefined, as *T. galapagensis* [clusters](/source/Clade) with the widespread *[Antecaridina](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Antecaridina&action=edit&redlink=1)* and *T. monae* likely with the Australian *[Stygiocaris](/source/Stygiocaris)*. On a higher level, these three genera, together with *[Halocaridina](/source/Halocaridina)* and *[Halocaridinides](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Halocaridinides&action=edit&redlink=1)*, form a group.[2] In addition to the species below, *"Typhlatya" jusbaschjani* (Georgia) and *"Typhlatya" pretneri* (Hercegovina) have been listed in this genus, but the former is a *[species inquirenda](/source/Species_inquirenda)* and recent authorities generally include the latter in *[Troglocaris](/source/Troglocaris)*.[5][6]
