== Etymology ==
There are several theories to how the river got its name. One legend states that a [wild cat](/source/Felidae) and [bear](/source/bear) fought on the riverbank, with the wild cat winning. == Course ==
The Tyger River starts as three forks in [Spartanburg County](/source/Spartanburg_County%2C_South_Carolina), in [upstate South Carolina](/source/upstate_South_Carolina), the north, middle, and south Tyger Rivers. The rivers flow generally southeastward until joining near [Woodruff](/source/Woodruff%2C_South_Carolina). The river continues flowing southeast until becoming the border for [Union](/source/Union_County%2C_South_Carolina) and [Newberry](/source/Newberry_County%2C_South_Carolina) Counties, while flowing 26 miles through [Sumter National Forest](/source/Sumter_National_Forest). The river continues until joining the [Broad River](/source/Broad_River_(Carolinas)) north of the [Parr Reservoir](/source/Parr_Reservoir). This point is the tri-point between Newberry, Union, and [Fairfield](/source/Fairfield_County%2C_South_Carolina) Counties.
