'''Tweeling''' (meaning [twin](/source/twin) in [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language) and [Afrikaans](/source/Afrikaans)) is a small town situated 22&nbsp;km from [Frankfort](/source/Frankfort%2C_Free_State) in the [Free State](/source/Free_State_(South_African_province)) province of [South Africa](/source/South_Africa). The adjacent  township is named [Mafahlaneng](/source/Mafahlaneng), or "place of twins". This region of the [highveld](/source/highveld) is colloquially known as the Riemland, recalling a time when it was a favoured hunting ground of the early pioneers.
 
==Early inhabitants==
The very first people or inhabitants of this place were the San, this is evident from the rock art and paintings left on the rocks. Students from the [University of Witwatersrand](/source/University_of_Witwatersrand) [Rock Art Research Institute](/source/Rock_Art_Research_Institute) are currently busy researching the site.

==Establishment of the town==
The town was established in 1920 on the two farms Tweelingspruit and Tweelingkop, their names derived from two similar looking hills just outside the town.<ref name="Stan01">{{Cite book |url=http://archive.org/details/standardencyclop0011unse |title=Standard encyclopaedia of Southern Africa |publisher=Nasou |year=1975 |isbn=978-0-625-00327-3 |location=Cape Town |pages=3}}</ref> It is situated just east of the [Liebenbergsvlei River](/source/Liebenbergsvlei_River) which is a conduit for water from the [Lesotho Highlands Water Project](/source/Lesotho_Highlands_Water_Project).

Tweeling is the halfway mark of the annual Liebensbergvlei Canoe Marathon. The two day race starts near [Reitz](/source/Reitz%2C_Free_State) and halts 33&nbsp;km downstream at Zorgvliet farm, near Tweeling.
