'''Twardawa''' {{IPAc-pl|t|f|a|r|'|d|a|w|a}} is a village in the administrative district of [Gmina Głogówek](/source/Gmina_G%C5%82og%C3%B3wek), in Prudnik County, Opole Voivodeship, in southern Poland, near the [Czech](/source/Czech_Republic) border.{{TERYT}}

==History==
The village was first mentioned in a document of Bishop of Wrocław [Wawrzyniec](/source/Wawrzyniec_(bishop_of_Wroc%C5%82aw)) from 1224, when it was part of fragmented [Piast](/source/Piast_dynasty)-ruled Poland. Its name is of Polish origin and comes from the word ''twardy/twarda'', which means "hard". The local parish church of Saint Margaret was first mentioned in 1305. Later on, the village was also part of [Bohemia (Czechia)](/source/Kingdom_of_Bohemia), [Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia), and [Germany](/source/Germany). In 1885, Twardawa had a population of 780.<ref>{{cite book|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |title=Słownik geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i innych krajów słowiańskich, Tom XII|year=1892|language=pl|location=Warsaw|page=679}}</ref> In 1936, during a massive Nazi campaign of renaming of placenames, the village was renamed to ''Hartenau'' to erase traces of Polish origin.

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), the Germans operated the E255 [forced labour](/source/Forced_labour_under_German_rule_during_World_War_II) subcamp of the [Stalag VIII-B/344](/source/Stalag_VIII-B) [prisoner-of-war camp](/source/German_prisoner-of-war_camps_in_World_War_II) in the village.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.lamsdorf.com/working-parties.html|title=Working Parties|website=Lamsdorf.com|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201029103834/https://www.lamsdorf.com/working-parties.html|access-date=7 November 2021|archive-date=29 October 2020}}</ref> After the defeat of Germany in the war, in 1945, the village became again part of Poland and its historic name was restored.
