The **Tuscan Archipelago** (or **Etruscan Islands**) is a chain of islands between the [Ligurian Sea](/source/Ligurian_Sea) and [Tyrrhenian Sea](/source/Tyrrhenian_Sea), west of [Tuscany](/source/Tuscany), [Italy](/source/Italy).

The islands' proximity to several major cities has made them a favourite tourist location. History and literature have ensured that most people are familiar with the islands of [Elba](/source/Elba) and [Montecristo](/source/Montecristo).

Legends says the archipelago originates from a necklace that [Venus](/source/Venus_(goddess)), the Roman goddess of beauty and sensuality, lost while emerging from the Tyrrhenian sea. In this myth, the seven islands are the seven pearls the goddess was unable to retrieve.[1]

## Geography

The Tuscan Archipelago lies between [Corsica](/source/Corsica) and the [Tuscan](/source/Tuscany) coast and contains seven major islands ([Capraia](/source/Capraia), [Elba](/source/Elba), [Giannutri](/source/Giannutri), [Giglio](/source/Isola_del_Giglio), [Gorgona](/source/Gorgona_(Italy)), [Montecristo](/source/Montecristo) and [Pianosa](/source/Pianosa)); all are protected as part of the [Arcipelago Toscano National Park](/source/Arcipelago_Toscano_National_Park). The Archipelago extends 166 kilometres (103 mi) from the northernmost island (Gorgona) to the southernmost (Giannutri) and 56 kilometres (35 mi) from the westernmost (Capraia) to the Tuscan coast.

## Geology

Capraia has a volcanic origin

The Tuscan Archipelago represents a region of correlation between the [Sardinia](/source/Sardinia)-[Corsica](/source/Corsica) block and the [Italian Peninsula](/source/Italian_Peninsula); it is formed by seven islands and several islets and skerries which have different geological provenance as [magmatic](/source/Magmatic_rock), [sedimentary](/source/Sedimentary_rock) and [metamorphic rocks](/source/Metamorphic_rock). The origin of the archipelago dates to the [Triassic period](/source/Triassic) according to the type of the rocks.

In the [Quaternary](/source/Quaternary) the archipelago was related to the sea level fluctuations due to the [glacial](/source/Glacial_period) and [interglacial](/source/Interglacial) periods; in the [last glaciation](/source/W%C3%BCrm_glaciation) the [sea level](/source/Sea_level) fell 100 metres (330 feet), and Elba became a [peninsula](/source/Peninsula) joined to the continent and to Pianosa. The [Würm glaciation](/source/W%C3%BCrm_glaciation) was followed by a warming phase, and the sea rose slowly to reach its current level.[3]

## Biodiversity

### Fauna

[Audouin's gull](/source/Audouin's_gull)

The archipelago is distinguished by some [endemic taxa](/source/Endemism) which are protected in order to avoid the loss of the [biodiversity](/source/Biodiversity) of [fauna](/source/Fauna) and [flora](/source/Flora). The most important are *[Oxychilus](/source/Oxychilus) pilula* of Capraia; and *Oxychilus gorgonianus* of Gorgona; *[Coenonympha corinna](/source/Coenonympha_corinna)*, *[Podarcis muralis](/source/Podarcis_muralis) colosi* and *[Vipera aspis francisciredi](/source/Vipera_aspis_francisciredi)* of Elba; and *[Vipera aspis montecristi](/source/Vipera_aspis_hugyi)* of Montecristo. 31 species of mammals, several introduced, are known from the Tuscan archipelago, with the greatest diversity on Elba, with 24 species.[4] The introduction of the [wild boar](/source/Sus_scrofa) to Elba several years ago has caused problems regarding the conservation of some plant species.

All the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are a place where the [migrant birds](/source/Bird_migration) take a stop along their seasonal movement from north to south and vice versa; the favourite places are Gorgona, Palmaiola, Cerboli and Montecristo. The *[Falco peregrinus brookei](/source/Falco_peregrinus_brookei)* nests on Elba and Capraia, the [shearwater](/source/Shearwater) and the rare [Audouin's gull](/source/Audouin's_gull) are common on all the islands.[5] The archipelago has been recognised as an [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) (IBA) by [BirdLife International](/source/BirdLife_International) because it supports breeding populations of [European nightjars](/source/European_nightjar), [Scopoli's shearwaters](/source/Scopoli's_shearwater), [European shags](/source/European_shag), [Audouin's gulls](/source/Audouin's_gull), [Peregrine falcons](/source/Peregrine_falcon), [Moltoni's warblers](/source/Moltoni's_warbler), [Marmora's warblers](/source/Marmora's_warbler), [Dartford warblers](/source/Dartford_warbler) and [black-eared wheatears](/source/Black-eared_wheatear).[6]

The rich productivity of the coastal waters provides habitats for various marine life, even dolphins and whales, including [fin](/source/Fin_whale) and [sperm whales](/source/Sperm_whale).[7][8][9][10][11]

### Flora

[Mediterranean buckthorn](/source/Rhamnus_alaternus)

The archipelago is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with high [insolation](/source/Insolation) all year round. The archipelago's flora differs from island to island; the smaller have a vegetation similar each other of *[macchia mediterranea](/source/Maquis_shrubland)* and [garrigue](/source/Garrigue) formed by [evergreen](/source/Evergreen) plants. Elba has a complex [orography](/source/Orography) including the mountain [Mount Capanne](/source/Mount_Capanne) which favoured the preservation of the [chestnut](/source/Chestnut), the [holm oak](/source/Quercus_ilex) and the [black alder](/source/Alnus_glutinosa) mostly on the northern side.

The main plant formations are those of [shrubs](/source/Shrub) of [Erica](/source/Erica_(plant)), [strawberry tree](/source/Arbutus_unedo), [Genisteae](/source/Broom_plant), [mastic](/source/Pistacia_lentiscus), [Mediterranean buckthorn](/source/Rhamnus_alaternus), [myrtus](/source/Myrtus) and [Phoenician juniper](/source/Juniperus_phoenicea); On Elba and Capraia the [cork oak](/source/Quercus_suber) is present, while the [Aleppo pine](/source/Pinus_halepensis) and the [maritime pine](/source/Pinus_pinaster) are widely spread on Elba and Gorgona.[12]

The endemic species of the archipelago are *[Centaurea aetalieae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Centaurea_aetalieae&action=edit&redlink=1)* (eastern Elba), *[Centaurea gymnocarpa](/source/Centaurea_gymnocarpa)* (Capraia), *[Centaurea ilvensis](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Centaurea_ilvensis&action=edit&redlink=1)* (western Elba), *[Crocus ilvensis](/source/Crocus_ilvensis)* (western Elba), *[Limonium doriae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Limonium_doriae&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Formica Grande), *[Limonium gorgonae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Limonium_gorgonae&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Gorgona), *[Limonium ilvae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Limonium_ilvae&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Elba), *[Limonium planesiae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Limonium_planesiae&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Pianosa), *[Limonium sommerierianum](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Limonium_sommerierianum&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo), *[Linaria capraria](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Linaria_capraria&action=edit&redlink=1)* (all main islands except for Giannutri), *[Romulea insularis](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Romulea_insularis&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Capraia) and *[Silene capraria](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Silene_capraria&action=edit&redlink=1)* (Capraia). Endemic taxa of lower rank are *[Biscutella pichiana](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Biscutella_pichiana&action=edit&redlink=1)* subsp. *ilvensis* (Elba), *[Festuca gamisansii](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Festuca_gamisansii&action=edit&redlink=1)* subsp. *aethaliae* (Elba), *[Mentha requienii](/source/Mentha_requienii)* subsp. *bistaminata* (Montecristo and Capraia) and *[Viola corsica](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Viola_corsica&action=edit&redlink=1)* subsp. *ilvensis* (Elba).[13]
