The '''Turan Range''' ({{langx|ru|Хребет Тура̀на}}) is a range of mountains in far [North-eastern Russia](/source/Russian_Far_East). Administratively it belongs partly to [Amur Oblast](/source/Amur_Oblast) and partly to the [Khabarovsk Krai](/source/Khabarovsk_Krai) of the [Russian Federation](/source/Federal_subjects_of_Russia).
==History==
The range was formerly a remote area, first explored by [Peter Carl Ludwig Schwarz](/source/Peter_Carl_Ludwig_Schwarz) during the East Siberian Expedition of 1855. It was mapped by [Arseniy Usoltsev](/source/Arseniy_Fedorovich_Usoltsev) together with geological engineer [Pyotr Gorlov](/source/Pyotr_Nikolayevich_Gorlov) in 1958.

A [railway tunnel](/source/railway_tunnel) of the [Baikal–Amur Mainline](/source/Baikal%E2%80%93Amur_Mainline) was built across the range.<ref name="GSЕ"/>

==Geography==
The Turan is a range in northeastern Siberia, located in the southeastern end of Amur Oblast and the southwestern side of Khabarovsk Krai. It is part of the [Yankan](/source/Yankan_Range) - [Tukuringra](/source/Tukuringra) - [Soktakhan](/source/Soktakhan) - [Dzhagdy](/source/Dzhagdy_Range) group of mountain ranges. Its ridges have a massive look, with rounded mountaintops.<ref name="GSЕ">[http://bse.sci-lib.com/article112863.html Турана] // [Great Soviet Encyclopedia](/source/Great_Soviet_Encyclopedia) : (in 30 vols.) / Ch. ed. A.M. Prokhorov . - 3rd ed. - M .: Soviet Encyclopedia, 1969-1978.</ref>

The range runs in a roughly NNE/SSW direction for about {{convert|300|km|}}, and its northeastern part is deeply dissected by river valleys.
To the north the mountain chain connects with the [Ezop Range](/source/Ezop_Range) (Езоп) and to the west and the southwest lies the [Zeya-Bureya Lowland](/source/Zeya-Bureya_Lowland). The [Bureya reservoir](/source/Bureya_reservoir) is located to the south.<ref name="GЕ">[Google Earth](/source/Google_Earth)</ref> The highest point of the Turan is the {{convert|1806|m|ft}} high Middle Nanaki ''(Средний Нанаки)'' located near the northeastern end of the range.<ref name="NAR">[https://xn--80aaaa1bhnclcci1cl5c4ep.xn--p1ai/cd1/278-279.html National Atlas of Russia. - Cartography, 278-279 "Amur Oblast".]</ref>

===Hydrography===
The Turan Range divides the catchment area of the [Selemdzha River](/source/Selemdzha_River) (a tributary of the [Zeya River](/source/Zeya_River)) to the west, and the [Bureya River](/source/Bureya_River) (a tributary of the [Amur River](/source/Amur_River)) to the east. The [Tashina River](/source/Tashina_River) and the Selemdzha tributaries [Ulma](/source/Ulma_(river)) and [Byssa](/source/Byssa_(river)), have their sources in the range.<ref name=WR>[https://water-rf.ru/%D0%92%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D1%8A%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%8B/2414/%D0%A3%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC%D0%B0 Water of Russia - Ulma]</ref>

==Flora and fauna==
The slopes of the range are covered by conifer forests, such as [larch](/source/larch), [fir](/source/fir) and [spruce](/source/spruce) up to altitudes ranging between {{convert|700|m|ft}} and {{convert|900|m|ft}}. [Dwarf Siberian pine](/source/Dwarf_Siberian_pine) shrub grows in the higher elevations.<ref name="GSЕ"/>

The range is part of the original habitat of the [Amur cat](/source/Amur_cat).<ref>V. G. Heptner (ed.) ''Mammals of the Soviet Union,'' Volume 2 Part 2 Carnivora (Hyenas and Cats). p. 338</ref>
