This article is about the surname. For the god in Khoikhoi mythology, see [Tsui'goab](/source/Tsui'goab).

**Tsui** is a surname. It is an alternative transcription of two [Chinese surnames](/source/Chinese_surnames), namely [Cuī](/source/Cui_(surname)) (崔) and [Xú](/source/Xu_(surname_%E5%BE%90)) (徐).

## Origins

Tsui may be an alternative transliteration of two separate [Chinese surnames](/source/Chinese_surname), listed below by their [Hanyu Pinyin](/source/Hanyu_Pinyin) transliteration (which reflects the [Mandarin](/source/Mandarin_Chinese) pronunciation):[1][2]

- [Cuī](/source/Cui_(surname)) (崔), which originated as a [toponymic surname](/source/Toponymic_surname) from a fief by that name in the [state of Qi](/source/Qi_(state)); a grandson of [Jiang Ziya](/source/Jiang_Ziya) renounced his claim to the throne and went to live in that fief, and his descendants took its name as their surname. It is spelled Ts'ui4 in the [Wade–Giles](/source/Wade%E2%80%93Giles) system of transliterating Mandarin (which remains common in Taiwan and was used elsewhere until the mid-to-late 20th century).[3] The spelling Tsui may also be based on the Cantonese pronunciation ().
- [Xú](/source/Xu_(surname_%E5%BE%90)) (徐), which originated as a [toponymic surname](/source/Toponymic_surname) from the ancient [state of Xu](/source/Xu_(state)), adopted by the descendants of [Boyi](/source/Yi_(husbandman)) after the state was annexed by the [state of Chu](/source/Chu_(state)).[4] The spelling Tsui is based on its [Cantonese](/source/Cantonese) pronunciation (); it is nearly [homophonous](/source/Homophone) with the above surname in Cantonese aside from the differing [tone](/source/Tone_(linguistics)).

## Statistics

The [2010 United States census](/source/2010_United_States_census) found 3,168 people with the surname Tsui, making it the 10,180th-most-common name in the country. This represented an increase from 2,725 (10,748th-most-common) in the [2000 Census](/source/2000_United_States_census). In both censuses, more than nine-tenths of the bearers of the surname identified as [Asian](/source/Asian_Americans), and roughly two percent as [White](/source/White_Americans).[5]
