Handwritten cursive forms of *Tshe*

**Tshe** (or **Tje**) (Ћ ћ; italics: *Ћ ћ*) is a letter of the [Cyrillic script](/source/Cyrillic_script), used in the [Serbian Cyrillic alphabet](/source/Serbian_Cyrillic_alphabet) and [Montenegrin Cyrillic alphabet](/source/Montenegrin_Cyrillic_alphabet), where it represents the [voiceless alveolo-palatal affricate](/source/Voiceless_alveolo-palatal_affricate) /tɕ/, somewhat like the pronunciation of ⟨ch⟩ in "**ch**ew"; however, it must not be confused with the letter [Che](/source/Che_(Cyrillic)) (Ч ч), which represents the [voiceless retroflex affricate](/source/Voiceless_retroflex_affricate) /ʈ͡ʂ/ and also exists in Serbian Cyrillic script. The sound of Tshe is produced from the [voiceless alveolar plosive](/source/Voiceless_alveolar_plosive) /t/ by [iotation](/source/Iotation). Tshe is the 23rd letter in the Serbian alphabet and 25rd letter in the Montenegrin alphabet. It was first used by [Dositej Obradović](/source/Dositej_Obradovi%C4%87) as a revival of the old Cyrillic letter [Djerv](/source/Djerv) (Ꙉ), and was later adopted in the 1818 Serbian dictionary of [Vuk Stefanović Karadžić](/source/Vuk_Karad%C5%BEi%C4%87).[1][2] The equivalent character to Tshe in [Gaj's Latin alphabet](/source/Gaj's_Latin_alphabet) is [Ć](/source/%C4%86).[3]

Despite being a Cyrillic letter, Tshe was also used in Latin-based [Slovincian](/source/Slovincian_language) phonetic transcriptions with the same value as in Serbian.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Being part of the [most common Serbian last names](/source/List_of_the_most_common_surnames_in_Europe#Serbia), the [transliteration](/source/Transliteration) of Tshe to the [Latin alphabet](/source/Latin_alphabet) is very important; however, there are many ways to transliterate it. It is typically transliterated as ⟨ć⟩, as per the Serbo-Croatian Latin alphabet or, without the [diacritic](/source/Diacritic), as ⟨c⟩; less frequent transliterations are ⟨tj⟩, ⟨tsh⟩, ⟨ty⟩, ⟨cj⟩, ⟨cy⟩, ⟨ch⟩ (also used for [Che](/source/Che_(Cyrillic))), and ⟨tch⟩, ⟨ts⟩ (the last one in Hungarian only, but ⟨cs⟩ and ⟨ty⟩ are more common). It looks similar to the [Shha](/source/Shha) (Һ һ) but stroked.

As it is one of the letters unique to the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet, and also the first letter of the Serbian word for Cyrillic (ћирилица), Tshe is often used as the basis for [logos](/source/Logo) for various groups involved with the Cyrillic alphabet.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

The letter is also used in the [Tat](/source/Tat_language_(Caucasus)) and [Judeo-Tat](/source/Judeo-Tat) alphabets in Azerbaijan.[4]

## Other uses

The capital Tshe has seen uses in [the English language](/source/English_language) as a symbol for the definite article *[The](/source/The)*—similarly to the [Ampersand](/source/Ampersand) & [At sign](/source/At_sign)—due to it appearing as a ligature of the [Latin script](/source/Latin_script) letters *uppercase [T](/source/T)* & *lowercase [H](/source/H)*—which are the first 2 letters of the English word *[The](/source/The).* However, unlike common symbols such as the [ampersand](/source/Ampersand) & [at sign](/source/At_sign), the use of the capital Tshe as a symbol in [English](/source/English_language) is not widely known or recognized.[5]
