**Tsecha Creek** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of [Kakiddi Creek](/source/Kakiddi_Creek), which in turn is a tributary of the [Klastline River](/source/Klastline_River), part of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River) [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) in northwest part of the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada.[3] It flows generally west for about 16 km (9.9 mi) to join [Kakiddi Creek](/source/Kakiddi_Creek) about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Kakiddi Creek's confluence with the Klastline River.[3][1] Tsecha Creek's [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) covers 23.1 km2 (8.9 sq mi) and its mean annual [discharge](/source/Discharge_(hydrology)) is estimated at 0.423 m3/s (14.9 cu ft/s).[2] The mouth of Tsecha Creek is located about 44 km (27 mi) east-southeast of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek), about 26 km (16 mi) west of [Iskut](/source/Iskut) and about 73 km (45 mi) south-southwest of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake).[1] Tsecha Creek's watershed's [land cover](/source/Land_cover) is classified as 47.8% [barren](/source/Barren_vegetation), 27.5% [conifer forest](/source/Conifer), 13.1% [shrubland](/source/Shrubland), 10.3% snow/glacier, and small amounts of other cover.[2]

Tsecha Creek is in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park) which lies within the traditional territory of the [Tahltan](/source/Tahltan) people.[4][5]

## Geography

Tsecha Creek originates from the northern slope of [Mount Edziza](/source/Mount_Edziza), a massive glaciated mountain in the middle of the [Big Raven Plateau](/source/Big_Raven_Plateau).[4][6] From its source between [Pillow Ridge](/source/Pillow_Ridge) and [The Pyramid](/source/The_Pyramid_(British_Columbia)), Tsecha Creek flows northwest about 8 km (5.0 mi) to the northwestern edge of the Big Raven Plateau. It then flows about 8 km (5.0 mi) east-northeast down the northwestern side of the plateau into Kakiddi Valley where Tsecha Creek drains into Kakiddi Creek at the northeastern boundary of Mount Edziza Provincial Park.[1][4]

## Geology

The head of Tsecha Creek lies in an area covered by loose black [cinders](/source/Scoria) and [ash](/source/Volcanic_ash) from [Williams Cone](/source/Williams_Cone), the youngest [cinder cone](/source/Cinder_cone) in the [Desolation Lava Field](/source/Desolation_Lava_Field).[3][7] This [lava field](/source/Lava_field) is one of the youngest volcanic features of the [Mount Edziza volcanic complex](/source/Mount_Edziza_volcanic_complex) which consists of a linear group of [volcanoes](/source/Volcano) on the [Tahltan Highland](/source/Tahltan_Highland).[4][7]

## History

The name of the creek was chosen by surveyors of the [Geological Survey of Canada](/source/Geological_Survey_of_Canada) and was first adopted 2 January 1980 on the [National Topographic System](/source/National_Topographic_System) map 104G/16.[3] Tsecha is a combination of the Tahltan words "tse" and "cha", which mean "rock" and "rain", respectively.[7] The name is a reference to the loose black cinders and ash at the head of the creek which rained down from an [eruption column](/source/Eruption_column) during the eruption of Williams Cone in 630 CE ± 150 years.[7][8]
