Born in [Merthyr Tydfil](/source/Merthyr_Tydfil), he was educated at [Clifton College](/source/Clifton_College), Bristol,<ref>"Clifton College Register" Muirhead, J.A.O. ref no 5434: Bristol; J.W Arrowsmith for Old Cliftonian Society; April, 1948</ref> and [Hertford College, Oxford](/source/Hertford_College%2C_Oxford). He studied under the architect Sir [Reginald Blomfield](/source/Reginald_Blomfield) as an articled pupil<ref name="Grove">{{cite web|url=http://www.oxfordartonline.com/subscriber/article/grove/art/T024973|url-access=subscription |title=Edwards, (Arthur) Trystan|first=J. M.|last=Richards|work=Grove Art Online|publisher=Oxford University Press|access-date=9 January 2015}}</ref> from 1907<ref name="DWB">{{cite DWB|id=s6-EDWA-TRY-1884|first=Raymond Wallis|last=Evans|title=Edwards, Arthur Trystan|access-date=9 January 2015}}</ref> and was enrolled at the [Liverpool School of Architecture](/source/University_of_Liverpool_School_of_Architecture)'s department of civic design from 1911 to 1913.<ref name="ODNB">{{cite ODNB|id=31062|title=Edwards, (Arthur) Trystan (1884–1973)|first=Gontran|last=Goulden|first2=Andrew|last2=Saint|year=2004}}</ref> In 1913 he returned to London and worked for the firm of [Richardson](/source/Albert_Richardson_(architect)) and [Gill](/source/Charles_Lovett_Gill); during this period his first architectural criticism was published in the ''[Architects' and Builders' Journal](/source/Architects'_Journal)''.<ref name="ODNB"/> He served in the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) from 1915 to 1918 and continued his involvement with the Navy into peacetime, serving for twelve years in the [Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve](/source/Royal_Naval_Reserve).<ref name="ODNB"/>

At the close of World War I Edwards joined the [Ministry of Health](/source/Department_of_Health_(United_Kingdom)) and resumed his architectural criticism. ''The Things which are Seen: a Revaluation of the Visual Arts'' was published in 1921 and ''Good and Bad Manners in Architecture'', which is considered to be his best work, in 1924.<ref name="ODNB"/> [John Betjeman](/source/John_Betjeman) noted that the latter work was "the first book to draw attention after the [Great War](/source/World_War_I) to [Regency architecture](/source/Regency_architecture) and to deplore the destruction of [Nash](/source/John_Nash_(architect))'s [Regent Street](/source/Regent_Street)."<ref>{{cite book|first=John|last=Betjeman|year=1986|title=Ghastly Good Taste|url=https://archive.org/details/ghastlygoodtaste00betj|url-access=registration|series=National Trust Classics|location=London|publisher=Century|page=xxi|isbn=9780712694629 }}</ref> In 1933 Edwards founded the Hundred New Towns Association, which was ultimately unsuccessful in its aims.<ref name="Grove"/> In 1953 he published ''A New Map of the World'', in which he proposed his "[homalographic](/source/normal_cylindrical_equal-area_projection)" projection.<ref name="ODNB"/>
