Bull was born in [Kristiania](/source/Kristiania) and attended [Oslo Cathedral School](/source/Oslo_Cathedral_School), obtaining his [examen artium](/source/examen_artium) in 1924. He taught at Sydneshaugen School in Bergen from 1936 and at [Bergen Cathedral School](/source/Bergen_Cathedral_School) from 1937.<ref name=nbl/>
